The sheer amount of debate and pointless banter that it would bring to the tables would be pretty fun. There would still be people voting as if it was a popularity contest, but you'd have the added element of predicting individual "power," something we've never seen before. I don't know... something new. Just a regular 64-character bracket, who would win in a fight style. Also, it would be lol xstats, since what if Character X would always beat Character Y in a fight, and Character Y would always beat Character Z, but Character X would crush Character X?
Seems like something fun to shake it up. I'd pay to see people arguing over "my character is stronger than YOURS!"

The very contest going on right now proves that GameFAQs is capable of voting based on a specific thing*. Hell, the Pokemon Trainers prove that themselves. I think the contest could work.
*Except for Link. He'll still win.

I feel like there's enough of a difference, too. Like, obviously, people will still vote for favorites no matter what. But, the theme clearly affects the contest a little bit.
