He was perfect as Arther Dent in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie from a few years ago. I'm hoping he does just as well here.

I know it will probably just be a teaser but I'm probably going to squee so loud.

hmmm really? He's been in a lot of things, from the British Office to HGTTG to some romantic comedies... you'll be pleased. He's a good dude, quite famous, great bit of casting.

So long as the first movie covers up to the finding of the ring, I'll be a happy camper.
Edit: Huh, after grabbing my book for reference, I forgot how early in the story that is! Now I'm wondering just how far the first movie will go.

I'll be honest, I loved the Lord of the Rings movie, and loved the Hobbit book. But I don't think Jackson will have as much success transitioning this into a two movie deal >_>

was that a thing? i haven't read the book since i was a little kid, but once i found out about LotR (which i haven't read), i always assumed the necromancer gandalf was referring to was sauron or saruman

If I recall correctly, the Necromancer was later confirmed to be an incarnation of Sauron.

never mind, according to wikipedia i was right and the necromancer is sauron. i thought you meant he was a different character.

i always thought gandalf's "important business" ended up being the events of LotR, i didn't realize he fought sauron while the dwarves and bilbo were dealing with smaug. was the story of gandalf dealing with him ever released?

It was told in Unfinished Tales, which I guess presented it as an unfinished draft of a chapter from Return of the King. Gandalf was going to tell Frodo about it while they rested up in Minas Tirith while waiting for Aragorn's wedding.
