If Gold vs. Silver, Brendan vs. May, or Black vs. N were in the contest, would any of them make it past round 1? It's not fair that the crappy Kanto games are infinitely more popular just because they were first.

You are a terrible user and should never post here again.
Objectively speaking, there is really nothing at all special in the first Pokemon as compared to the later ones. There is literally nothing better about Red/Blue other than nostalgia.
Of course, nostalgia is a powerful factor in deciding which games one likes, I'm just saying.

The rivalries are definitely different in each game. While nostalgia's a huge factor, some people might just like Blue's attitude as a rival more than the others.
Nostlagia rules in this site. When in the top 10 games are Ocarina of Time,Chrono Trigger,Final Fantasy VII,Link to the past what do you expect?

To be fair a lot of elements in today's gaming were defined long ago.
Yeah but when you see fans of Zelda series say that OOT is the best Zelda game, fans of FF say that FF VII is the best FF game and fans of Elder Scrolls say that Morrowind is the best ES game then why you keep buying the new ones if they dissapoint you?Play the old ones only since these are the ones you like more!

Yeah, it's only starting RSE that the rivalries became terrible, and possibly not even rivalries at all. Though I haven't played BW yet; maybe it's decent there.
None of the other rivalries would do as well since a good chunk of people never played past gen 1 or 2 and Red/Blue has a lot more going for it than Gold/Silver.

Now keep in mind that it's not just the games here, but the rivalry.
It's not the same. Red and Blue were trying to outdo each other. The protagonist and N are opposed to each other, and there are two other rivals in the game, including the much-more-directly-a-rival Cheren.

Silver was a better-written character than Blue, and N was a better villain, but neither of them could match Blue just in terms of being a great rival.
Brendan/May and Barry, meanwhile, just sucked.

Gold/Silver pretty good too imo
Silver was another rival that you could easily hate, like Blue, but Silver's motivation was simply to steal and become stronger against pretty much everyone (especially Team Rocket). He considered you more of a nuisance than anything else until much later in the game. Blue on the other hand, specifically wants to prove he's better than you, and vice-versa. The guy even manages to beat you to the championship, as the ultimate kick in the pants. Even though you manage to claim the title from him, it doesn't change the fact that he still got to it first.
