3 is definitely the best. Everything about it is perfect.

People who think 4 are the best imo are silly. After replaying all the games and putting a lot of thought into it, I've realized that 4 is the least awesome. Something about it just... isn't as good as the other three. The story is off, the characters aren't as great (except for a select few), the gameplay isn't as fun, the bosses aren't as interesting... Other stuff.

I love MGS4, and the gameplay is still fantastic, mostly. And it definitely has a couple of the most epic boss fights in the series. But it isn't enough to warrant me putting it higher than any of the other three games.

Campbell is better than Zero, The Boss, The Sorrow, and The End are the only good members of their team, and if you want to maximize your stealth you need to open the menu every thirty seconds (seriously, OctoCamo was one of the best additions in MGS4).

It's still a fantastic game, but it's not perfect.

Oh my god you don't have to open your menu much at all. There's one camo to use in the forest, one to use in the desert, and then other than those two you probably won't ever be using any other camo aside from the Scientist and Raikov outfits.

Campbell being better than Zero, whatever. I don't agree, because Para-Medic and Sigint are the ones that matter when it comes to the MGS3 radio conversations. Campbell is also a lame character with a boring voice. Para-Medic is actually enjoyable to listen to.

And if you don't think Ocelot was awesome in MGS3 then I can no longer acknowledge you.

But it is perfect. Story is the best, characters are the best, boss fights are the best, gameplay is the best, Big Boss is the best, rivalry is the best, action is the best, cutscenes are the best, references and easter eggs and secrets are THE BEST Everything. The best.

Of course Ocelot is awesome there. I didn't mention him because he was done as well as possible.

Nope. Liquid's rivalry is the best, and hell, at the end of the day, The Cobras have no impact on the story. The Boss does, but only she does. The rest of The Cobras are just bosses. At least FOX-HOUND directly influences the story as a force, The Cobras are just bosses (ironically, except for The Boss).

No, Tiger Strike takes care of it all. If you have that on, you will always have a good camo index in the forest while crawling.

Sigint is boring. There are a few good conversations with him, but the entertainment there comes from Snake, not Sigint.

Fair enough, but Para-Medic is still the best. She's awesome and way better than any other codec companion in any of the games.

Snake and Liquid have nothing on the emotion and stakes involved with the Bosses rivalry. The FOXHOUND members also didn't have much impact on the story. They were more developed, sure, but they were still just people to kill before you could move on. The Cobra unit was just that, because that's all they were required to be. And they did it well. The Sorrow also had a huge impact on the story, because if it wasn't for him, Ocelot would not exist. And then we'd have a huge problem.

I'm going to have to take your word for this, because it's been years since I played MGS3 (I plan to replay it after my finals, and make a boss ranking topic for the series), but I recall constantly changing my camo to keep it above 90% as I moved.

Fair enough, but Para-Medic is still the best. She's awesome and way better than any other codec companion in any of the games.

Para-Medic is pretty good. She' better than Mei Ling (whose accent shouldn't have been retconned, but that's another story), yeah, but she's like the only interesting radio companion in MGS3.

Snake/Liquid can't match the personal emotion, it's true, but their rivalry is still great, just in a different way, and I have to admit, I just plain like Liquid's boss fights more than The Boss'. And FOX-HOUND had plenty of impact on the story. The individual members may not have (though Ocelot is a member of FOX-HOUND and, well, I don't have say why he's important), but they at least have impacts on the themes of the game. Sniper Wolf's death, Vulcan Raven's predictions of what Snake will face and what he is, and Psycho Mantis'... well, okay, but he's still so cool that whatever. The Pain is just a guy covered in bees. The Fear isn't even that.

90% is overkill for camo. You don't need that high of an index to put yourself into an advantageous position to take out guards. The only real time you need an index that high is when guards are on alert, actively looking for you, and are nearby. Normally, anything above 50-60% will do the job.

It's good, but a step down from the other games in my opinion. For one thing, since all the boss fights are huge robots it lacks the dynamic awesomeness of MGS boss fights in other games. And the story is less fleshed out than usual. But still, it's a very good game, definitely worth a play for the MGS fan.

And of course, MGS2 and 3 at 60 fps HD all hot and sexy is quite nice.

You rarely need 90% anywhere unless you're getting right up to an enemy... which is never necessary. Unless you have to CQC them, in which case it's just better to run up on them anyway (from behind). They'll hear your footsteps and turn around but by then you're already slamming their face into the ground before they get a chance to give you an alert.

Para-Medic is pretty good. She' better than Mei Ling (whose accent shouldn't have been retconned, but that's another story), yeah, but she's like the only interesting radio companion in MGS3.

The Pain is a guy covered in BEES. He's a walking fad. It's awesome. The Fear is just freaky and I love him. The End needs no explanation. The Fury CAME BACK FROM SPACE and he reminds me of the Batman villain Firefly, because they just want to set the world ablaze. Which just adds to his awesome. The fight with Liquid is just a plain fist fight, I don't find it to be anything special. Unlike the fight with Gray Fox, which was fantastic. The fight with The Boss is so much better because there's just so much more emotion and tension and just... everything. I just love it so much.

I just freaking love MGS3 so much. It's my favorite game ever and so perfect.

It's very worth it. Most of the people who bought it already owned MGS2 and 3. The reason to buy it is to play them in SPECTACULAR HD. And it is very spectacular. The trophies also add a lot more to do and achieve.

As for Peace Walker, I'm still in the middle of playing it. It wasn't that great at first, but then I really started enjoying it. It's fun. Still not nearly as good as the main games. All of the bosses being mechs gets quite tiresome.

Peace Walker isn't comparable to the main games. Good story/voice acting, but the environments and AI makes it feel like you're playing the same level over and over, and in the case of bosses you literally ARE doing that. Environments are pretty much all corridors with 2 levels of height at most. AI is dumb as hell, like MGS1 or something. You just run up to them and knock them out, then fulton. Every single soldier. Never changes throughout the entire game.

I would say it's good for a PSP game, but then you have games like BBS which destroy the console games, so that's not an excuse.

Kind of embarrassing that you posted that, really.

(MGS SERIES SPOILERS)

Story: 2 > 1 > 3 > 4
Theme/Moral: 1 > 2 > 4 > 3
Gameplay: 2 > 4 > 1 = 3
Boss Fights: 1 > 4 > 3 > 2
Characters: 1 > 2 > 3 > 4
Ending: 3 > 2 > 1 = 4

The only thing MGS3 has a lead on the rest of the series its ending. A perftectly designed ending. Im also tempted to put 4 ahead of 3 in characters. I decided not to because MGS4's characters were mostly just thrown in there for fan service. Aside from naomi, not much character development existed in MGS4. So i decided 3 > 4 there.

Overall gameplay, 2 and 4 take the cake. The only thing MGS2 does bad is boss fights. The only memorable one is raiden vs a bunch of metal gears.

Story, 1 and 2 kill 3 and 4. The way MGS2 begins with its tanker mission is the best 2ish hours in the whole series. MGS1's story also has a great start, and shadow moses is the best location in the series.

MGS1 and 2 also have a much better theme. MGS3's "the era you grow up in defines who you are" isn't examined as much as one might think in stories, so it gets creativity points there. But MGS3 didn't expand on its theme nearly as much as MGS1's "nature/nurture" debate and MGS2's "memetic engineering" debate.

MGS4's theme of "perception and sense" is prominent throughout the game, from Snake's attempt to understand Naomi's intentions to the misguided attempt of Zero to follow The Boss's will. You also see it in the character of liquid ocelot. Yes, it turns out it was ocelot all along. But if the whole world perceived him to be liquid snake, what is stopping us from saying it was liquid snake? Another great theme examined.

I have never seen a really good argument for why MGS3 is the best one in the series. I guess it is the most easy to follow, so it gets some points for being the most straight forward of the 4. Which can be a good thing (it can be bad also). I just feel that people should play MGS for a complex, questioning storyline. Its why i dont understand the people who still say "OMG, is MGS a game or a movie??". One shouldve known what MGS is about by the 2nd one at the latest.
