A hare like me couldn't catch up to Black Turtle.

Arkham Asylum had a certain point in the game where you couldn't move forward because a grate you needed to get through was impossible to get through.

It gave you a good five hours before that though, which was a pretty smart idea.

Not really a preventative measure, but when copies of Dark Souls started showing up on the network before street date in Japan, the devs started repeatedly invading their games with maxed out characters and slaughtering them over and over again.
