Before I forget, just wanna say: Big Bob is an awesome dude. It was great having him on The Show and getting a chance to talk to him for a bit. We haven't really interacted much on the board, but he's a fun guy. Too bad he couldn't hang around for the entire Show.
LeonhartFour posted... When discussing the future of the contests, I think sometimes Allen tries too hard to keep the contests "fresh." I feel like he may think that he has to keep mixing things up in order to "sustain" interest, even though we've seen that people still care enough to vote in straightforward Character Battles and Games Contest. We've also seen these "specialized" contest ideas haven't turned out all that great overall either.
I don't have a problem with trying to innovate, or tweak the formula... I think SB does have a point about people getting burned out on the "same old, same old," so new formats could help to sustain interest or create new Contest fans. I just think that if he set up an alternating schedule, we'd get the best of both worlds. Like if next Summer we had a full 128 Game Contest, and then in the Winter we did a little mini-Contest for something new (maybe Best Console Ever). In Summer 2013 we could run the All Fictional Character Battle, do something unique again at the end of the year, and then by 2014 we'd all be ready to see something cool with Games again.
None of the burnout, all of the freshness!

I don't mind innovating either. He's come up with some good ideas.
But sometimes I feel like he thinks he has to do something different, to the point that he can't run the same type of contest twice. And then we end up with an idea like this because he forces himself to do something different when nothing different needs to be done.
But if we get a Character Battle/Games Contest early next year, we can excuse this one the same way we do the Villains Contest and nobody will care.
Man, just hold a character contest without Link. If Mario wins due to being a Link proxy, well, awesome for me!
I don't really care about a fictional character contest, but then again, I'm probably one of the few people in the world who has had a significantly more exposure to video games than to any other fictional medium since if I'm not doing something VG-related, I'm probably reading a science book, watching The Discovery Channel, or doing something similar. I'd like to know if there's anyone on the board who shares this sentiment.
I'll mention right now that I was lucky to be born into a neighborhood where Nintendo consoles seemed to easily outnumber non-Nintendo consoles (plus my cousin brothers seemed to be more into the GameCube than the PS2 - the only PS2 game I remember them showing to us was Tekken Tag Tournament, and they owned the GameCube versions of multiplatform games like Soulcalibur II and Pac-Man World 2, to say nothing of stuff like Melee, Mario Party 4, Star Fox Adventures, Metroid Prime, The Wind Waker, and the rest of the Nintendo parade), too, so Mario was basically the first fictional character I knew about. That does not help matters.
On a side note, Super Smash Bros. Melee turned 10 years old yesterday, didn't it? Wowzers. I remember getting the game with for my cousin brothers right in the month it came out (and I got a copy for myself in Summer 2002 with my GameCube). Heck, I even remember that the first multiplayer match my cousins set up with each other featured Link and was on Brinstar. And I remember thinking "man, this Samus guy sure looks cool as heck". I didn't know "he" was female until I got the game myself.

Game of the Decade might have been the only "specialized" contest idea that turned out great. It had more brackets than our 2010 Character Battle, which shows that there was interest in the contest.
-- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ!

Not changing this sig until the Bengals, Bills, Browns and Lions win the Super Bowl (10/10/10) The most American Canadian on Board 8 - #9 Bro on Board 8
On the plus side, the Guru Cookie has been eliminated! We're left with only 4 Perfect brackets, and only 35 that have still been able to avoid elimination. Will be interesting to see what kind of damage this did to the Battle Brackets, though...

I changed my battle pick to the Trainers yesterday because Big Bob's talk on The Show as well as Luster gave me good enough reasons to switch. I was dreading this match all day, but it looks like payed it off. Still perfect in the battle leaderboard now.
