Let's go through the reasons why some people were chosen:

Junpei - I guess the creator(s) are saying that he, and only he, is able to have an invisible communication link to Akane

Snake - Knows the layout of the place, so he can aid people

Clover - To serve as a bargaining chip to keep Snake quiet for as long as possible

Seven - Same as Snake but has physical attributes that could provide useful

Lotus - Honestly have no clue, but there was that one room where her computer hacking skills prevented Clover from dying

Ace - Pawn, but as was shown in essentially every ending, he is a major threat and Santa/June were idiots for allowing him to participate and were lucky to be alive in the true ending

9th Man - Pawn, not as much of a threat but a threat nonetheless.

Seven was also chosen because he's probably an accomplice to some extent.

Why do we just shrug at the new planners and say good riddance to the original ones?

You're not supposed to call June and Santa nice people; they were out half for revenge. The commentary from that link earlier suggests that June in particularly is a pretty nasty piece of work in actuality. But it was relatively justified, June's actions were limited anyway by the stable time loop, and the plan was for only the four genuinely evil people to be in any real danger.

Plus it should be added that every route but the true route were only 'theoretical' outcomes from her perspective seen through the morphogenic fields by her. She knew no one would get hurt or killed aside from those she was going to take revenge on in 'her' reality.

Snake would probably have been pissed all said and done about the danger, but more than likely would have wanted to aid her in surviving and taking revenge with the situation explained. Clover is also a very vengeance driven person, as shown in the Axe ending. Seven was likely in on it the whole time, faking amnesia, and Lotus was able to find out more about the people that hurt her kids, which she said she had always wanted to do. Junpei, obviously, didn't want Akane to die.

Everyone had a stake in going along with June, even if they didn't have a choice in the matter.

And as Scep said, the creators acknowledge that June is suppose to come across as a person that is selfish and has a messed up personality, and is more than likely why she runs away from Junpei at the end.

I seriously don't think Seven was faking his amnesia. He truly couldn't remember whether Akane died or not because of the whole time paradox thing.

Going through some of the interview now:

- What the hell is this "rest of the plan" nonsense?

- I guess Lotus was only there for the computer part

- So the reason why she was in that attire is because...she wanted to. So what should I expect when they explain what Seven was wearing?

- Why did I expect to have a different opinion after reading his explanation of the entire point of the game?

- That's right you can't show your goddamn face to me, not Junpei but me, again June!

- It's so weird we have this "alternate" personality of June that we only see from her actions and not the woman herself in physical or conversational form

- Oh, so Junpei never sees June again. That's probably for the best

- What a stupid backstory on the robe Snake wore and Ace

- Aww, I am kind of disappointed that Clover didn't live after killing four people with an ax

- How the hell can your favorite character be June/Akane?

- Genius and noble? Sure as hell didn't see that from her

- So fevers meant that Junpei was heading down the wrong path. I must admit, that's pretty clever.

As a side note, I hope that they explain who was talking on the intercom at the beginning. I don't recall Santa directing the line of questioning for the group and it seemed as if Zero was speaking about things that people asked directly, so I think a recording is out of the question. June was silent too

Note to self: I am on question #56

Because we like Akane, and we want her to live.

Honestly I think it's a cool aspect of the story. You get to the end and you're like "omg yay Akane lives and everyone lives happily ever after... except everyone who died and all the participants who have been mentally traumatized... damn Akane is cruel as ****!" It's a lot deeper than just a simple happy ending, I think. It makes you think about how you would probably do the same if you were in the same position.

My reasonings for these are the same general handwaving excuse you can use for pretty much everything in the game: Akane saw the future like this, so she just recreated it. It doesn't matter what anyone was there for, because they were the only ones who COULD be there for the loop to be realized.
And for the intercom, I say it's a recording, and June just recorded the answers since she knew what was gonna happen... kinda weird reasoning but I think it's a funny scenario to have people talking to a recording.

- What the hell is this Lotus/Seven canon relationship nonsense?

- So this took place in 2027? Hopefully that will explain the characters' odd senses of style and why children have white and grey hair

- I was wondering how the hell Santa/June could physically carry everyone to Building Q but now I see that they did have plenty of unnamed goons

- I am not buying the guy's explanation for Clover in the safe ending. However, I do like his rationale for the safe combination.

- I am disappointed that what Snake heard in the piano cabin room was the other team going through the other door

Personally I always figured that the writer was exaggerating when he said June was a nasty piece of work, he got asked the exact same questions a couple times so towards the end he started to exaggerate **** instead of repeating the same damn answer every time. That's not to say that June probably is a but messed up after all that, but the way she acted with everyone really doesn't seem like some act she's putting up just to hide that she's Zero and on the inside is actually someone like Ace.

Pretty much the same with how I feel regarding if she and Junpei ever meet again after the ending, I don't think I can say they ever WILL meet again but I really don't think Junpei would spend the rest of his time chasing after her but never catching up. While June obviously doesn't want to face Junpei after everything is revealed, he just seemed far to important to her to never see him again.

Exactly. And even though the player may realize this quickly, think about Junpei's character. For whatever reason, he's infatuated with Kanny, so he never thinks for a second that what she's doing is morally wrong. Honestly, I never even gave it much thought until you went through it, and all of a sudden, I see how hypocritical I was playing through it the first time. After my first time through the true ending, I felt like Ace was one of my most hated characters of all-time. Not a bad thing, it makes for a great story if there's a very unlikable villain. But now I realize that I just kinda hate Akane. And..... I'm not so sure that's what they were going for.

There's a HUGE difference between Ace and Akane though, Ace is an un-repentant monster who kills anyone he feels like for petty reasons like he doesn't want a secret to get out. Akane was only responsible for the 9th Man (I feel like counting anything Ace does as a kill for her to be rather unfair) and gave them a chance to repent for their horrible crimes and be spared. Her reasons for this were also rather good, even if they are at the same time selfish, I mean she's trying to save the life of an innocent little girl even if said little girl happens to be her past self.

She's not exactly a perfectly sane person, something like the Nonary Game could easily screw up a little kid, especially being nearly burned alive by an ass who wants to test out some "SCIENCE!" thing, but I do not believe she's even remotely close to being someone like Ace.

Actually, they are perfectly fair. Remember that Akane had access to all the different possible outcomes to her nonary game, and knew exactly what had to happen in order for Junpei to save her. This timeline led to three of the four Cradle Pharmaceutical's employees dying. And she knew this, and still went along with it. If you count one, you have to count them all.

And what is she supposed to do, just NOT do the Nonary Game and thus causing a complete Time Paradox? she also can't directly interfere at all since that also prevents the outcome she needs. That letter to Ace wasn't just for the sake of having it, she really did give him a chance to repent for his sins but he refused. While it's not like tears are shed because some Child Killing jerks are dead, I really don't get the impression at all that she was A OKAY with them dieing but again she doesn't have any real choice in the matter other then just letting an innocent little girl die a horrible death.

Child-killing jerks? Because of the time travelling/conversations across time mumbo jumbo, there were no casualties from the previous nonary game.

Also, June clearly baited Ace to kill at least the Chief of Staff and investor.

Why would she have a disoriented Chief of Staff with the #2 bracelet right in front of a numbered door that she or Santa recently placed the components back in that a para-whatever afflicted Ace came to to with his and the 9th man's bracelets in tow?

Why would she leave a ****ing axe right in the middle of the captain's quarters where a disoriented investor on a chair was at.

Yes, Ace did both of those things on his own free will, but June baited a clearly paranoid and distraught Ace into doing so

The more I think about it, yeah, she pretty much had absolutely no control over the whole thing. She was connected to the future and saw all the different possible timelines that could occur, and that was when her fate was sealed. The only timeline that could actually happen without causing a paradox was the one in which she lived.

She couldn't even have chosen to just let herself die in the incinerator. Or rather, no matter what she did, the timeline where she lived to do the Nonary Game would always exist, and that's the one that we care about. It's like, you can't change the future, because by definition it is something that WILL happen

Ace thought the Nonary Game was a wonderful idea and didn't give a **** about the fact that he was going to kill an innocent child, you keep trying to make Ace out to be some not so bad guy when no he was a Complete Monster. Sounds like your just an Ace fanboy or something, well that and a June basher. Ace would have killed regardless of if June "Baited him" or not, so really you can keep deluding yourself all you want since I'm not going to bother continuing this.l

Just finished up 999 today myself.

I didn't really think Snake or Seven were all that great, personally. Snake has that scene in the Safe Ending, but other than that, I think he's pretty boring.

I "like" all the characters in the sense that I think they were well done for what the game was trying to accomplish with their characters though.

I actually didn't care for that scene in the Safe ending, or rather I felt indifferent toward it. Every character, to an extent, is boring in the game since they are in a confined, unnatural area that limits their ability to fully express themselves like they would under normal circumstances. Thus, I probably put more weight on dialog than most others who play it.

I just finished the game myself, so I'd like to provide some input.

I had no real problem with the supernatural elements because it seemed like a twist from a Layton game, and I'd call 999 basically an M-rated Layton game.

Favorite character: Seven, with Clover and Snake close behind. I think he totally was lying about his amnesia, by the way. I also don't see why his outfit needs to be explained; some people dress funny.

Least favorite, and the only one I disliked by the end, was June. Especially since, after being revealed as Zero, I expected some kind of confrontation like with Ace... But we never see her again, and she loses her one chance to be interesting. Still loved her Tobias Fünke moments, though.

And Insaw the Alice thing at the end as the devs just trolling. Though hearing she's a main character in the sequel kind of makes me sad.

I don't really like the "Know-it-all" type protagonist, so Snake doesn't really resonate with me. It makes him pretty boring just to be the guy who knows everything.

And while Seven's backstory is good, his personality grates on me a bit.

Dunno how I'd properly rank the characters though.
