There's a monster collecting gimmick to fill in the holes for when the story splits your team up into groups of two characters, which happened all the time in FFXIII.

Hope - a tonberry
Vanille - a marlboro
Fang - a chocobo

FF13 is at least 30% better

Yep, its coming out in January in America.

I personally can't wait.. it looks significantly better than FF13 to me. I am especially hyped about finally being able to play as Serah. She was the character I was more interested in than any during the FF13 trailers.
