I have this discussion with my friends a lot and I wanna get other peoples' opinions.

Now to be fair, I don't watch any other anime but this one. My friend is a big anime fan and watches shows such as Naruto and does not consider Avatar to be a real anime because it is American made.

What do you guys think?

No. An American cartoon isn't anime even if it's drawn in anime stylus. I don't consider The Boondocks anime either.

Look at your quote. Now look at mine. Sadly, your quote isn't mine, but if you watch Adventure Time, it could SMELL like mine. I'm on a rainicorn!

Yeah it's not an anime, though I'm pretty sure the creator admits to drawing inspiration from anime or some crap so it's not like there's a huge difference. It's also not like it matters.

I consider it a cartoon with anime styles and influences, but not an anime.

The only way you can argue it's anime is if you use the word anime the way the Japanese use it, and no one does that (except the Japanese), so you just sound like a tool.

I don't care what anime is supposed to me, as far as I can tell it's an animation style.

It's that style.

Go Avatar, best anime ever.

Well it depends. Anime is obviously japanese animation, but it can also include other asian animation, especially chinese and korean.

But Avatar is animated in korea, despite being developed in NA. Then again, the new My Little Pony, and other american shows, are also animated in korea. I think if the storyboard and direction is all in NA then it's not an anime.

Han-guk Manhwa Aenimeisyeon

That is a really long name for animation.

Well, you obviously don't care about the difference at all. Chinese animation is Huarenzhi donghua, and Korean animation is called Han-guk Manhwa Aenimeisyeon. Seriously, simply calling Chinese animation 'anime' is grounds to get you verbally lashed at (as my dad learnt in Hong Kong the hard way).

Well of course there is a difference but this topic is about the perception of what is "anime" or not, and from a western perspective, those differences don't matter. If I were ever to go to China, I would actually respect the differences because I know it's a big deal.

Yeah, I've never heard anime used to mean "all Asian animation". Usually people go with the loanword definition of "animation from Japan" or the Japanese definition of "all animation."

And what I mean about the people saying "anime is all animation" sounding like tools are the people who argue stuff like Tom and Jerry, Family Guy, or The Lion King are anime just because Japanese people call them anime. That's pretty toolish.

Topics like this are pointless. People will stupidly claim that only something from Japan can fit in a certain region, even when other things fit the mold solidly.

Not all anime is from Japan, not all animation from Japan is anime.

Not all JRPGs are from Japan, not all RPGs from Japan are JRPGs.

Are you arguing the "style" definition? That it's the style that matters and not the location? Because that is a far messier argument.

Also "wat" @ not all animation from Japan is anime. Under what definition is something animated in Japan not anime?
