lol @ judging a game by its disk size

The whole "game is too small on disk" thing is easily the flat-out most idiotic thing I have every heard. I can't even comprehend how dense you have to be to even consider judging a game by something like that.

I'm actually really impressed with it, if anything. Doesn't Rage come on 2-3 discs? Here is Elder Scrolls on one, yet it has this enormous overworld and like 300 hours of content.

Don't cinematics and stuff take up the most space? I thought that was why MGS4 was such a big game for example. A game like Skyrim doesn't have too much cutscenes.

I'm more shocked at how some people actually think the amount of content and size of the game world have anything to do with the size of the disk. There is literally zero co-relation. Zero. Rage is so big because the textures are increcibly high quality which takes up A TON of space. The textures used in the Oblivion and Skyrim are nowhere near the same quality and thus are drastically smaller size. Plus, they re-use textures, dungeons, voices, etc. over and over again.

It never ceases to baffle me how ignorant most gamers are as to how their hobby works.

Like when you're talking to someone about an area that was cut from a game, and they're like "it probably didn't fit on the disk".

Why are people this stupid and not doing anything to remedy it?


3D models take like no space. All the environments, characters and objects in a game take about as much space as 10 seconds of the opening cinematic. The only data you need for a 3D object is the XYZ coordinates of each vertex, and how they are connected. A typical high-quality 3D game character may have something like 4000 vertices. Meanwhile, a pre-rendered cutscene requires color information on every pixel on the screen for every frame. If it's HD, that's 1920 x 1280 = 2457600 pixels, each typically needing 32 bits of color information... PER FRAME. Possibly at 60 frames per second. See how huge that difference is?

And then we have the people who don't understand the difference between in-game and prerendered cutscenes. In-game cutscenes take no space. It's just some simple information about how to move the characters around on screen. Move arm up. Stretch finger out. Pick nose. All the in-game cutscene visuals in the game probably take about as much space as one cutscene's worth of voice acting. High quality sound takes quite a lot of space.

Of course, textures can add up to a sizeable amount of disk space as well, especially if there's bump mapping, which means every texture is basically two in one. But textures are tiled and reused. That huge grassy field is probably just 100 polygons with 3 simple 1024x1024 textures blended together here and there to avoid looking tiled. Takes like 2 megabytes.

Hope someone is slightly less clueless now.
