Review: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-10-21-uncharted-3-drakes-deception-review

Analysis: http://www.giantbomb.com/news/when-a-mostly-positive-review-becomes-controversial/3764/

Wonder if b8 is mature/smart/not stupid/whatever enough to not slam the review like so many others.

I know this was already posted in the uc3 review topic, but it deserves it its own topic.

I don't have a problem with Eurogamers review, but what the hell does this even mean?- "As an expression of all that a video game could be, however, Uncharted 3 is narrow, focused and ultimately shallow."

'As an expression of all that a video game could be', just sounds like the reviewer was putting a very high expectation level on the game, when he shouldn't have been. Hype should never be taken into account for a review imo(negative or positive), but it happens a lot nowadays it seems.

Other than that, it's a well written article, and if he thought it should be an 8, he gave it an 8.

He's basically saying that it's not much of a game. There's not enough actual interaction, too much of it is meant to be cinematic.

Seems like a perfectly valid opinion.

Of course, a lot of people are upset about it

The review, content-wise, wasn't that great. It spent multiple paragraphs talking about how Uncharted is linear, and that's no good. It was also a little weird that most of the problems they had were things that were praised in their UC2 review, though it may have been different reviewers. In any case, an 8 isn't a bad score, and nothing to get upset over.

The Eurogamer review is actually my favorite UC3 review out of the dozens I've read so far.

I really just don't feel the need to read reviews for games like this.

I can wait one week; it's not like they're going to influence my decision to buy it anyway.

*Amazing this review is the one being called 'controversial'. To me, the 10/10 review that either mentions the flaws of the game and still gives a perfect score OR the review that doesn't mention the flaws at all (an even worse crime, assuming the reviewer thought there WERE flaws) is the true controversial review. Gamers that don't see this as a problem need to wake up to the PR machine cause the Matrix has you.

It's the only one I've bothered to read so far. I was interested about what was 'controversial' about it; Uncharted 3 isn't a game where I need to someone else's opinion! The reaction is typical overblown hype, though I wouldn't go out of my way to praise Eurogamer either.

I just don't like Jaffe's opinions. I don't get where he is coming from I guess. He basically ranted about that same stuff at the Gametrailers bonus round thing. For some reason he has this opinion now that you can only do storytelling if it doesn't detract from the play at all, insinuating that, thats what games do now. Kind of masochistic honestly, considering the whole God of War series is exactly like this.

I don't think he takes into account at all how story can enhance gameplay. Imagine all the God of War games with legitimately good characters and storytelling, I might have actually disliked Zeus enough to care about fighting him, hence enhancing the fight.

I also don't like his points about what games sell. First off, plenty of cinematic games sell like GASP, his own series God of War. Gears of War 3, Uncharted, etc.

Now, those games he listed are the top sellers, but I don't think it's so much because IT'S ALL GAMEPLAY. Angry Birds sells well because it's fun and all, but also because it's like $1, and free sometimes. Madden sells well because everyone loves football. Multiplayer focused games sell well like MW, but I also think, once again, this is a value thing more than anything. Games are expensive. For those of us that truly love the medium, it's not a big sacrifice to spend $60 on something we want, for a lot of more casual people, they feel like they are wasting their money unless they buy a game like MW3, which they can probably spend most of the year on.

As for the Eurogamer review, I think it does make some valid points when it comes to a few of the set pieces, and the platforming anyway, which applies to the whole series, though in UC2 they did a better job of having a few platforming sections that you actually needed to do something. I also think it over-analyzes things too though, especially with the point that you can't just holster your gun and stuff. Who cares? Jaffe can romanticize the review all he wants, but personally I believe that the review is like most eurogamer pieces, overly-cynical and trying way too hard for those extra hits due to being at the bottom of the metacritic pile.

and this is from someone who doesn't care that much about the series.

Yeah, there were some dumb examples in that review that were meant to try to reinforce their point, but they fell totally flat, I thought. The gun holster was one of them. That's the ultimate 'who cares.'

I don't agree with this at all. If you can't give a flawed game 10/10, you can't give ANY game 10/10.

It's very possible that the flaws they've listed are clearly enough that the game shouldn't be receiving the highest score. Sure, the games receiving that 10/10 scores are flawed, but the ones that deserve it probably don't have very many.

Then obviously the reviewer felt those flaws weren't enough to stop it from getting a 10/10. We, the reader, can form our own opinions about those so-called flaws and how we feel about them. That's why I liked the UC3 review Eurogamer did. I totally get that he feels its more of a movie then a game, and that by maximizing the illusion of success and eliminating frustrating, it also eliminates much of the depth, challenge, and interactivity many of the best video games utilize. And I get why he doesn't like that, and that I can live with that, and just re-enforce my purchase even more.

this jaffe piece is a wreck too

I enjoyed it more than 99% of human based shooters on the market

'human based shooters' lol

It doesn't bash U3 at all (for to do so would just be trolling for hits since it's clear there ain't a thing in U3 that is bash worthy)

this is a ridiculously fanboyish statement and i'm wondering what his definition of 'bash' is

it is controversial if there is CONTROVERSY over it, you idiot. it's not an intrinsic property of the review. the examples he mentions are bad but if no one calls them out, they're not controversial.

Look at Guitar Hero, MW3, Angry Birds, Farmville, Mario, Madden, Wii sports, and on and on and on.

yeah, games should definitely be more like farmville
