You go through the origin stuff, with the first big mission, whose events go on to shape the rest of the game. Then they give you 3 different quests, the order of which is your choice. When you finish them all, it takes you to the final area.
This has been my experience from playing KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age.

That picture isn't completely accurate (I would argue that BG1's four places that you go to is structurally different from the other games enough that it doesn't count), but yes, Bioware is in love with its template. -- Not changing this sig until I decide to change this sig.
