I don't know if anyone else will want to join in on this, but seeing as how there is only a week and a half until Uncharted 3 (hype) releases, I thought it would be a good idea to do a (re)playthrough topic for Uncharted 1 and 2. Given that there are only two games in the series, and both are relatively short (7-12 hours), that's enough time to make it through both in time for UC3.
This isn't meant to be a playthrough topic for me, necessarily, but for everyone and anyone who wants to join in. It's better if you do, in fact! The purpose here is mainly to have a place to discuss all the good and bad in Uncharted, what could have been better and what will be great heading into Uncharted 3. Uncharted discussion is always a good time; having a central place for that discussion is even better!
If you're new to the series, and want to try to play UC1/2 before UC3 releases, this is a good place to start:
I might actually do this. So tag for now. Still busy doing Dark Souls things atm, but considering how short both UC games are, I could probably knock em both out the weekend before release.
Started a Hard game. Nice, first cutscene is skipping like crazy.Must be a scratch on the disc or something. Gameplay starts and the audio from the cutscene is still playing. I thought I was playing a ND game not a Bethesda game.
I wanted to do this, but then I got caught up with a bunch of other games so I didn't think I'd have time. But I finished plat'ing God of War 3 last night, so maybe I do have time to run through them.
Still haven't played number 2, but getting 100 percent on 1 really made me appreciate it.
7 hours is kinda lol, unless you're dying a whole lot.
And the pacing is really wonky, chapter 4 has like six big encounters without any cutscenes and then you get chapters 18-23 which are all a room or two in length.
I played through both a few months back. UC2 good as ever. The fight while you're waiting for Elena to arrive right before the train is truly intense, especially on Crushing.
-- ~Wigs~ Board 8's #1 Supply Chain and Facility Location Fanboy I need to put something interesting here.
I love Uncharted 1. It has some problems, for sure, but it's certainly not "average." Everything that's good about Uncharted is still present, just not as refined.
i've played uncharted 1 many times. It's hella fun every time. Uncharted 2 was amazing the first time... and that's it. it's just average afterwards. UC1 is way more fun to play than UC2.
TheKoolAidShoto posted... Remember guys, ZFS also likes AC1 almost as much as AC2
I don't! I think AC2 is a much better game; I think AC1, on the other hand, was a far more ambitious, and interesting, project that fell short of what it was trying to accomplish but nonetheless was a good experience. I tell people to play it because it's worth playing, not because I think it's on par with AC2.
With Uncharted, I go UC2 > UC1 like everyone, but I legitimately think UC1 is a great game.

Yes, I really love that part. I died a couple of times on it but it was probably the most "intense" part of the game.

The major thing is poor gameplay balance - some early puzzles then virtually none for the rest of the game. None of which require much thought.
Then there's chapters like 4 which are purely shooting fields literally full of waist high cover and bullet absorbing enemies. Hated that part on crushing. Uncharted 2 improved on this so much.
Add in the fact that there are many areas in which Drake finds a secret entrance or whatever yet the super secret area down below is full of enemies. Also the water room where they literally come out of the walls... really? ND were trying to add in combat in place of what should have been puzzles etc. There is no major integration between them.
Then there's the corny characterisation where you virtually know what they are going to say (Sully's cigar/women). Everyone is a stereotype.
The jetski levels were fun but were obviously not made for the higher difficulties, I spent ages fighting against the rapids and slowly picking off the enemies one by one (the same as most most youtube methods).
So no, Uncharted 1 is nothing special at all. It has great scenery and some good environments but its simply a B tier game. The good thing is that it laid the foundations for the improved UC2.
All enemies in UC1 go down to a headshot, everytime. It's not *that* difficult to pull off either. I've never quite understood the 'bullet sponge' complaint in UC1. If you aim at the upper half of the body, you can take them down pretty quickly. You can't just go crazy with the shooting.
Also, let's be real - puzzles are not Uncharted's strong point. I think they were better in UC2, but you literally just open Drake's notebook to find out what to do. This is true in both games. The pacing was better in UC2, and I always enjoy the breaks in the action, but if we're criticizing UC1 for 'easy puzzles' we might as well do the same for UC2.
I've always felt UC1 was more 'game-y.' the way you move, the way the game is laid out -- it's more like a game in many ways, where UC2 really amped up the cinematic aspect. More set pieces, bigger set pieces, better pacing.
It's an acquired taste. It's not as good as UC2, but the shooting in all the Uncharted games feels different from the 'standard,' I think. You have to kinda adjust to its style. I've seen people criticize UC2's shooting mechanics as well. I agree, though; I'm not really trying to paint a picture where UC1 is better, but I think it's a great time own its own merits. I'll never really understand the mindset where UC1 is average, but UC2 is top tier. That just doesn't register for me. The core of both games is the exact same.
Agreeing with ZFS here entirely. Uncharted 1 isn't as refined, or even good - it has semi-shoddy shooting mechanics and the fights can be utterly ridiculous on crushing. But the environments are gorgeous, the characters are still great, more sully, EDDY ****IN' RAJA, and the gameplay is "passable", if not good. (I don't think UC1 is bad in any particularly meaningful way just that it's dwarfed by Uncharted 2 in every single way) - all that adds up to way more than an average game for me.
-- I'm too tired to drive anywhere, anyway, right now, do you care if I praise Black Turtle? Call me numbers.
I'm completely with HM on this one, it's not a case of Uncharted 1 being better or as good as UC2, it's more a case of UC1 being appreciated on its merits. UC2 in a lot of ways obsoletes UC1; apart from the little story things you miss out on, UC2 does more or less everything better and you could just skip straight to it if you wanted. More "refined" is definitely the best way to put it.
But if you take UC2 out of the equation and look at UC1 as a game on its own, it is a terrific game - an 8/10 easily, probably 8.5. Same goes for Ass Creed 1 (though I'd be more likely to give it say a 7.5) and same goes for Resident Evil 5 to some extent - though in the case of RE5 it's the prequel that makes the sequel look bad, not vice versa.
LeonhartFour posted... The core of the games is the same, sure.
The first game just isn't designed as well. That's the difference.
Can't say I agree. I guess I could understand this to some extent, though. Maybe I've just played the game so much that I don't run into the same problems. To me, UC1 is just as fun to play as UC2, primarily because both games excel at the same things.
But I don't think UC1 particularly excels at the way the game is laid out, so I can't say they excel at the same things because that's what makes UC2 so much better.
XIII_rocks posted... I think it suffers from the same problem Ass Creed and Uncharted do, in that they are looked down on because a related game trumps it so thoroughly.
I played Uncharted 1 without intending to really play 2 and felt exactly as I said earlier. Only later when I finally got around to 2 did I start to enjoy the series more. So my opinion hasn't changed. Still a 7/10 game then and now.
The controls for UC2 are superb, they are what I classify as standard shooter controls, that why ME2 seems clunky to me. If UC2 did anything exceptionally its the cover based movement. Very fluid.
One reason I probably look down on Uncharted 1 is because I played it during a stretch of goods games - MGS3, 4, Resident Evil 4, Chrono Trigger, ME2, Heavy Rain, Metroid Prime and obviously Uncharted 2 later.
Yeah, I played Uncharted a few months after it came out back in early 2008. I've loved it since the first time I played it, so I'm coming from a similar place. It just clicked with me instantly, felt like a modern day Tomb Raider. There are still some problems I have with it -- Sixaxis controls, clunky cover, some weird pacing here and there -- but for the most part, it's among my favorite games.
I haven't read this yet, but 1UP did a "History of Uncharted" sort of thing. It talks about the previous games and how everything has built up to what Naughty Dog has done in Uncharted 3.
"Two weeks before Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception hits shelves, I find myself in a conference room in Naughty Dog's office in Santa Monica. For two and a half hours, I get to hear developers discuss topics such as the creation of the original game, and some of the major hurdles in creating this next installment. Sitting down along with Wells is fellow co-president Christophe Balestra, creative director Amy Hennig, lead designer Richard Lemarchand, cinematics animation lead Josh Scherr, and actor Nolan North."
shooting feels worse in UC1, as is the segmented pacing
Definitely not. It actually seems like you're shooting a gun in uncharted. In uncharted 2, it feels like you're shooting a water pistol. The shooting in 1 is so much better.
Also, playing again in a few. Time for one of the hardest parts, the crashed plane part at the end of CH 4
This game doesn't work very well with my ps3 any more. I had to put the disc in 4 times before it recognized it. Maybe it has to do with new firmware. I hope it saved, I don't want to do that part again.
I've been meaning to go back and Platinuming UC1. But the shooting is so horrendous and the whole "i know where you are behind a wall even though I can't see you' crap that Resident Evil 5 seems to suffer from as well.

Complete bulls***. Uncharted 1's shooting is so bland and clumsy its not even funny. Hit detection, cover snap, cover movement, enemy spawns, and encounter design are all flawed throughout almost the entire game.
Its an incredibly AVERAGE game in every regard except the presentation, and even that is starting to age.
