I thought it was pretty clearcut that magic was defended against differently than simple physical means, but if you want even more definitive proof:
Manaketes, such as Myrrh from the same exact game Lute's from, attacks by transforming into a dragon and breathing fire at the enemy. Her attack scales based off of strength rather than magic, and is defended against by defense rather than resistance.
There you go. Fire =/= Magic that happens to be fire.

Yeah, I generally agree with Lopen's interpretation here - recalling specifically the FF8 intro where the fire just sort of dissipates upon contact. I see it as more of a magical force, imbued with fire, or ice, or whatever element you're casting with. The defense of such I see as more related to arcane knowledge and power; it's why mages are better at tanking magic in gameplay - your knowledge and magical wherewithal enable you to better resist such forces. Such as how the toning of your body can better equip you to deal with physical blows.
Lute; I think magic will be particularly effective against Fury here, and in particular, the fact that he isn't resisting at all. It'd be like scoring constant metaphorical critical hits. 40 seconds of which is enough to put Fury down.

The tome animations may be impressive, but I don't see lute being amazing enough to take someone like Bryan down in time. The dude's probably tankier than Ike. And I can see Ike passing a challenge like this easily.
...Ike wouldn't stand 10 seconds of nonstop spellcasting from an actual mage that he's not allowed to dodge or counterattack, much less 40. And he's got way better magic resistance than Fury.

Yeah, from a 20 magic unit in FE10 with a half-way decent spell -- not even something as good as Fimbulvetr -- would wreck Ike in like 3-4 casts, at most.

Magic =/= physical force. There are arguments for both sides, but there is more evidence supporting that they are different things. Lute is good enough to beat Fury here.
At best, Lute'll get off 13-20 castings of Fimbulvetr, assuming she doesn't pause casting, say, for instance, to try and figure out why Bryan is so overconfident or how he doesn't die after the first few castings. And that sort of thing is right up Lute's alley, considering her...er, academic approach to life. Artur, the priest who grew up with her, said, and I quote, "On the rare occasion you went outside, you were paralyzed with fascination." So I wouldn't put it past her to cast a few times, and then just start poking Bryan and asking him questions.
'Course, it helps that Bryan's durable enough to survive Lute's magic, anyway.

Lute definitely plugs away at Bryan for a handful of spells, but is likely to get giddy with excitement over it more than anything when Bryan just keeps standing there smirking and not even trying to fight back. If she were a sage this would be one thing, but just being a mage doesn't give her the firepower to take down Bryan in less than a minute.

Not that it has anything to do with anything, but I remember Ike's magic resistance being absolutely terrible. In a game where he was overpowered as crap, magic was one of the few things that could completely ruin his day (provided it actually hit him past his crazy dodging ability)

We are thought, and reality, and concept, and the unimaginable
Maybe at the beginning of the game, she was like that... but after fighting hordes of undead, legions of soldiers, and the king of demons, I don't think a "tanky dude" is going to set her off.

Well, it continues to show the more "durable" types end up getting wrecked by magic. Same can be shown by Gatrie and more or less any physical unit, they almost universally have horrible magic resistance compared to people who actually use magic.

Thinking about it, I personally think that Lute might be insulted by the challenge more than curious. Like who is this guy to claim that she, top prodigy and master spellcaster, can't take him down when he's not even defending himself? I'm not sure there are many situations where she is called out but I can't see her ego taking this challenge very well personally. She might get curious after he's dead but I don't think her inquisitive mind beats out her ego.
