Board 8 > Is there a better platforming trilogy than Donkey Kong Country?

Can't think of one myself. Not to say that any one of them is the best platformer, necessarily (although DKC2 comes close for many people), but as a series, I'm not sure it can be topped.


and this topic was inspired entirely by that sweet Donkey Kong Country atlas i ran into a while back, which got me thinking

yes it is, DKCR is a different thing entirely

and no, there is no platforming series of any number of games that is on par with DKC

SMB is close but DKC2 is better than all of those games.

utilizes backgrounds differently, forces waggle controls, has a much different rolling mechanic, donkey and diddy can't swap

if galaxy counts as something separate from SM64 and sunshine then DKC and DKCR are different.

the background thing is entirely aesthetic, waggle controls are new but not game-changing at all, mechanics evolve throughout a series all the time.

galaxy, sm64, and sunshine are all fundamentally different in some sense, definitely much more so than DKC1-3 and Returns. whereas the mario 3d series has been a constant movement forward in creating fresh new gameplay, DKCR is pretty much a return to form after games like DK64 and whatever those other games were.

uh, no, the level design is multi layered, this is something not featured in DKC

galaxy, sm64, and sunshine are all fundamentally different in some sense, definitely much more so than DKC1-3 and Returns

DKCR is part of it, it's not a trilogy.

And if DKCR doesn't count than you can take any trilogy from SMB and beat it.

sunshine added the entire fludd and water cleaning mechanic to sm64's platforming

galaxy took away the fludd and added gravity shenanigans

DKCR did...what exactly? it's a great game BECAUSE it's pretty much exactly more of the same goodness spruced up with some cool tricks like "multi-layered level design" (which plays exactly the same, you're just further away from the screen) and waggle.

in any case, "a different thing entirely" is completely wrong. it's right there in the game's title: Donkey Kong Country Returns

Guys, guys. I love DKCR as much as the next guy, but there are two good reasons not to include it here:

1) It's not a part of the original SNES trilogy.
2) There aren't exactly a lot of four-parter platforming series to compare it with.

But it appears that this topic's title has reached a consensus. Good taste B8!

DKC wins either way, though SMB has my eternal respect and we all know DKC wouldn't have happened or been anything near what it was without SMB before it, SMB was more innovative for its time but the DKC games are more refined.

NES SMB is the only thing I can think of that rivals it.

I'll agree for now, but ask me tomorrow and I might change my mind.

edit: I want to extend my praise to the SNES MMX series, which will eternally hold #3.
