Just walkthrough'd my way through the original in one sitting. Surprisingly, it only took four hours. In the past couple months, I've replayed Twilight Princeess (the one entry I've been meaning to replay most) and beaten the last three console Zeldas to evade me - Adventure of Link, Four Swords Adventures, and the original. Fun times, and now my Get Hype is complete. No more Zelda until Skyward Sword.

Honestly, everything in the middle is kinda murky. The only locked in spots are the top two and the bottom one. Yeah, I've got the two NES games on the bottom. The series just EVOLVED (yes Zelda games do that) too much afterward, with much better puzzles, more meaningful dungeons, and funner exploration. Still, I wouldn't consider any of them to be bad games, and think most are outstanding.
I think LoZ is the only long-time series of which I've beaten every console game. Fitting how my favorite series is the only one to hold that distinction. Ask me anything, I guess!

The last three games were pretty short for Zelda standards. I probably put as much time into those three combined as I did into my Twilight Princess run. I can't believe I beat the original in four hours, even with a walkthrough.

I'd beaten it before, but I just replayed the original Zelda the other day. It blew my mind when I realized how quickly and easily I'd beaten it. I remember struggling for days when I was younger just to get the damn raft.
Granted, the internet and the information available to me over the years certainly helped(I definitely didnt know the location of every heart container when I was younger).

Ehhh. You'd have taken a hell of a lot longer without a walkthrough, assuming you'd never played it much before.

Ocarina feels a little boring to me in comparison with the other four Zeldas I've played, although I consider it to be more or less interchangeable with MM and TP (top two spots for me are LTTP and WW for sure, in that order), and all of those three only have some minor flaws keeping them from being all-time favorites of mine.
I'd love to replay some of these, but alas, I have no access to a gaming console right now.
LttP is comparatively low on my list because I prefer the 3D Zeldas. Even the more flawed ones like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess contain some of the richest, funnest, most addictive gameplay I've ever seen. Link's Awakening (the only handheld one I've played) is higher because I just love its music and story. I also played it younger; it was my second Zelda game right after OoT, so it presented more of a challenge (I was 14). I played through LttP a couple years later, and after notching a few Zelda games on my belt, it presented less of a challenge. Maybe another playthrough is necessary after SS, it's been almost five years.

Just play all the handhelds. Yes, even Four Swords, now that it's single player too and free. Don't skip the DS games either. Phantom Hourglass isn't great but it's worth playing for some interesting new ideas for the series and Wind Waker's formula particularly, and Spirit Tracks is fantastic. And of course Oracles and Minish Cap have already been said to be great.
So yeah, handheld Zeldas, get to them. You liked Link's Awakening, you'll like these.

I kinda doubt it. There's just too little hinted at in the game, and there's probably a (very short) limit as to how much fun I can have wandering around an NES world searching for the next dungeon. Do oldtime players remember how long it took them to find the entrance to Dungeon 8?

I have a hell of a time finding dungeon 2, actually. I was going into dungeon 8 before dungeon 3-7. dungeon 7 is the real impossible one to find.
Zelda 1 is a single-playthrough kind of game for me at this point. same with Mario World. if I get halfway through and stop, I just start over next time.

True, good point. I guess a lot of those dungeons would be tough for me to locate blind. This is a game that promised like 200 hours of gameplay back in the day, and I'd believe it.

I can only imagine. One thing I really like about the original LoZ is how the combat stresses patience. Going crazy with the sword (as is often customary in 3D Zelda games) would get you killed in seconds against a room of Darknuts.
To this day I still get frustrated and will zerg a blue wizrobe or two at the start of a room to lower their numbers a bit(actually, I'll probably clear any orange first). 3 is manageable, any more than that and they start jumping around and its easier to just eat a few hits to take a couple down.
I've got darknuts down pretty well though.

I tried that a few times and noticed I was taking too much damage each time. The worst rooms are the few at the end with Darknuts, Wizzrobes, and those Bubbles that disable your sword. Son of a!

And Like Likes too, those show up in those rooms a lot as well.
And if you think that's bad, the second quest adds two new types of Bubbles--the first is a red one which indefinitely disables your sword if it hits you, and the other is a blue one which re-enables the sword if you got hit by a red one. Sometimes you'll get hit by a red bubble and there won't be a blue one anywhere but the complete opposite side of the dungeon!
