They're requesting they all move back to the original camping site, another site was set up because the original was too full. I'm missing the part where riot gear is necessary. I'll attempt to find a link that isn't one of the threads over at DailyKos, but its all over OccupyBoston and BostonPD's twitter feeds I guess too.

They're probably using riot gear because that is what you use when you have to try to get a large group of people to do something they don't want to do.
Well, I guess we'll see what happens, whoever's running the OccupyBoston twitter feed seems to think the police are waiting for the media to leave (the media was told to leave) before they move in, but that's of course, whoever is running that twitter feed.
I wish I could stay up, but that last time I stayed up really late to watch police action, I ended up watching the Vancouver police NOT destroy the rioters for 2.5 hours when they really really really should've.

I don't see why people are protesting other than at Wall Street anyway. Do they just like shouting stuff or what? I wouldn't say Boston had much of anything to do with the financial collapse.

The company that operates one of the parcels of land, and the police/mayor, were fine with the protesters occupying it. While they don't support the "cause", they put up 6 figures to facilitate a healthy relationship between the protesters and police.
The protesters were instructed that they couldn't use the second piece of land, as it's a public park that closes at 11:30. They strategically positioned people to this spot, most importantly putting those "Veterans For Peace" guys there. They also taunted and goaded police, and there is one reported incident of an unprovoked assault on a cop.

Hey guys, Kanye West just showed up at Occupy Wall Street. Apparently he heard there was something called a human microphone and wanted to try to steal it.
The protesters were instructed that they couldn't use the second piece of land, as it's a public park that closes at 11:30.
