bit out of the loop on what is currently hot in the world of laptops, but the first step would be to decide what uses you want it for. just general netsurfing or video and you could pick up a solid netbook for a few hundred.

when i was last looking a few years back, 400-500 could get a fairly meh but still decent laptop...just depends on the functions you want.

I have an Acer Aspire similar to the one you posted earlier. Got it half off at Newegg on Black Friday 09. Really solid machine, strong value purchase.

are you looking for netbooks or laptops? I don't know of any laptops that run for $500 or less and are any good

if you want a decent netbook in that range, look up the Asus EEE series

Thanks for the suggestion. A lot of people are saying to push it off until Black Friday but its really on its last legs.

also, the acer has a better graphics chip as far as i can tell than the i3.

If you're not the type to be really careful with your laptop I can't recommend the Acer and I'd go with the Toshiba. That and the specs on the Toshiba seem a bit better at a glance.

But yeah, my Acer was like... falling apart after 2 years. A lot of the keys on the keyboard didn't work, the touchpad was spaz at times, and the case had a pretty large crack that I don't recall any specific cause for, and the battery->power cord connector had to be replaced. I mean I'm not too careful with laptops, but my Asus is pretty much good as new and I've had it a year and a half, so I wanna think Acers are just cheaply made. (which makes sense, given the price) Granted they may have improved over the years I dunno.

Again this may not apply to you but if you're not the careful type it's something to consider.

The Toshiba is better. The processor is better. It has the better graphics as well. Also the hard drive is bigger.

The PC board could help with this as well.

I have the acer quad core in the topic.

I like it a lot, really light. Meh battery life, 3-4 hours but thats all i need.

Runs the games I play well enough.
