By the way, I still really hope Suicide Squad gets good. That's a comic I really want to like.

As long as Adam Glass is writing, it'll never be good.

They need to kick him to the curb and get someone else, pretty much anyone else would be preferable.

Batgirl was pretty solid; I wasn't sold on Mirror as a legitimate villain in issue one, but Gail managed to persuade me.

Demon Knights was great again, though I'm not 100% convinced of how Paul Cornell is characterizing Vandal Savage.

ZenOfThunder posted...
anyone watch year one yet?

Year One was awful; the animation was wooden and felt more like a motion comic than a movie. The script was good, but the voice acting was subpar and wooden as well.

The Catwoman short, on the other hand, was fantastic.

That's just because they're either bitter about Babs "taking a step backwards" or because Stephanie is no longer Batgirl, or both.

Those people are silly, honestly. Now if it had been Cassandra Cain that was losing the mantle to Babs again, I would be pissed too... of course, the transition from Cass to Steph was worse, and I already had to deal with that, so... Bleh.

Oh hey, Regenesis was actually rather good(as long as you don't buy Generation Hope, too, apparently!). The artwork isn't good, but the actual story and character interactions are great. It touches upon so much of the recent X-men history, from bus of kids blowing up, the Messiah trilogy, X-Force, Morrison's New X-men, and it brings all that together so all the various X-characters moving or staying makes sense and is consistent with continuity.

I think the first issue had a lot of flaws, and I think I gave it a C, but I'm still going to give a series a chance after an average first issue if it has a character I enjoy written by a writer I'm a fan of. The last few pages of Batgirl #1 were far worse than the somewhat dismissive attitude toward her paralysis, though I'm not sure how that's worse than trainwrecks like Dark Knight, Catwoman, Legion books, Red Hood, and others.

I'm probably going to be a month behind on this book. The DC books I bought today were Frankenstein and Demon Knights, and I picked up a physical copy of Batwoman. The other books, like Batgirl and Green Lantern, I'm okay with waiting a month for a $2 copy.

Green Lantern, Demon Knights, Superboy, Frankenstein, all excellent books, as expected.

My Greatest Adventure is super fun. The Tanga and Garbage Man stories are continuing directly from Weird Worlds, but hey, that's what I wanted. Kevin Van Hook and Jerry Ordway's Lobo story is gone, replaced by Mat Kindt and Scott Kolins' Robotman. I really want to see where this one goes and Scott Kolins is very impressive here. People should check this out.

Grifter #2 was better than the first, but it's ridiculous how written for the trade this is. I don't even want to read it until the arc is done. I like Cafu, but Scott Clark (Firestorm pages in Brightest Day) on issue 4 should be nice.

Tomasi and Gleason continue to impress on B&R. I guess my only issue it that this one seemed....short? Morgan is a new character, as far as I can tell.

I honestly can't even tell it's not Greg Rucka behind Batwoman. Excellent.

I really didn't think you could make a comic that was literally just "this guy is a total badass, let's show you how badass he is for 20 pages" and have it work, but Deathstroke does it.

The Shade was excellent, we are 4 for 4 on these mini-series so far. Also, a COMPLETELY unexpected ending. I'm sure it's a fake out, but still, it's a good one.

I...don't really know what to think of Mister Terrific. I don't think I'm gonna keep picking this one up. Wasn't terrible, but...meh.

Great week, overall.

The thing with the DC relaunch is there wasn't a single book that I just HAVE TO READ THE NEXT ISSUE OF, like I do with Scalped or Daredevil or Uncanny X-Force, Casanova, and PunisherMAX. They're good books, sometimes great books, but even with Batman, I'm not on edge about "DICK GRAYSON, MURRRRRRRRDERER!?" I'm reading more books post-relaunch then before, but I still miss Secret Six and Morrison's Batman

In what way is Superboy a better book than either Uncanny X-Force or Daredevil? I can't think of a single measure in which Superboy comes ahead. Character, plot, diction, motivation/themes, art -- these are how you criticize a work in comics. Where is Superboy superior, and how?

I'm just going to tackle the easiest one for now, art. Even comparing first issues, Rivera and Martin's work on Daredevil is breathtaking. We're allowed to see the world through Daredevil's eyes in a way we've never seen before. Their work is fresh and lively. What is RB Silva's answer to this?
http://cdn.ifanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Daredevil_1_Preview2.jpg?tti?tti

Or this?
http://img.imgcake.com/Icon/DaredevilMartinjpgsa.jpg?tti?tti

These are memorable images. I've read a lot of Daredevil, and I don't recall something as striking as Rivera's rendering of echolocation. And just look at Martin's splash page! It's busy, in a good way, and does a better job at connecting the reader with Murdock than the traditional panel work in Superboy. I'm flipping through Superboy again, and I don't see anything that compares to Daredevil. It's just the standard, clean, DC house style we're all familiar with by now. Perfectly fine, but unambitious. Rivera and Martin, on the other hand, touch on the art of someone like Ditko, but manage to make the old feel new and lively.

'Familiar, yet new and lively' perfectly describes everything about Daredevil, really.

STOP ARGUING EVERYONE HAS OPINIONS

and when you grow up you'll learn that it's not the opinion that matters, especially in art and literature, but the quality of the argument behind that opinion. I disagree vehemently with KoolAid's take on Rucka's Punisher, but I'd rather converse with him on a subject we disagree on than converse with you on a subject we agree on.

Because I like the the character Superboy.

I love Waid's Daredevil. But I don't give two ****'s about Daredevil himself. I can't think of a major Marvel character I am less interested in. Have I read a lot of Daredevil to make a true judgement on that? No. But that's how I feel right now.

Same goes for X-Force. I don't like Psylocke. I'm tired of Deadpool and Wolverine, and I mean TIRED. I couldn't care less if they were gone. Deadpool is excellent here, but it's an overload. I don't care about Archangel. I like Fantomex, sure, get him a solo book, maybe put Cornell on it. But these 2 books have SO FAR failed to do what Hickman's excellent Fantastic Four run did: get me to care about characters I didn't care about before. And if I don't care about the characters that much, no matter how good the book is, it's not going to mean as much to me.

Superboy is about a character I really enjoy. Sure, it's not technically as good as the others if you really want to get into that, but I enjoy it more. Is that really that hard to understand?

When all you said previously is 'I like it more because I like it more, and if you don't that's fine' yes, it is, because you're not saying anything of value. There's no discussion between two people, and throw in a dismissive, confrontational tone, there's no room for future discussion.

What don't you like about Waid's Daredevil, four issues in? And what do you like about Lobdell's Superboy, two issues in? I'm not talking about the books, just the characters. I've only read the first issue of Superboy, so I'll only compare Superboy to Daredevil as depicted in their respective first issues, but Superboy is a dick. He's a cold, callous individual. He's not empathetic towards the plight of others. He's a narcissist. If we're judging books purely by their characters, I don't know how we're supposed like Superboy. The sympathetic character in the book is the lab technician from the Wildstorm line, not Superboy. I don't see what's there to like. Maybe the promise of adventures with the Teen Titans?

Meanwhile, Daredevil a fun-loving, swashbuckling superhero. He's playing around with his secret identity, flirting with mob bosses' daughters, learning how to play a violin in minutes. He's the antithesis to Superboy, and I think that makes a more inviting introduction to a character.

From: ZenOfThunder | #291
icon why do you blow things up like this

Blowing what up? LTM loves comics. He should like to talk about the comics he loves. I'm not antagonistic, I'm legitimately curious as to why LTM enjoys Superboy more than two other books. And unlike you, LTM is capable of coherent thoughts.
