I'm a little over a month into my first year of teaching and I already know I can't keep doing this.

These kids are so horrifyingly lazy and stupid that at this rate, I'll be dead before I'm thirty.

I'm gonna get certified to teach math and try to get a job at a school with better students.

But I am also gonna look into teaching at my local community college.

I'm just curious if any of you have done this and what getting certified might entail.

You need a Master's Degree in whatever your subject is to teach at a community college. You can get a part time job at a four year university with a Master's, but you need a proper doctorate for a real job there.

the lazy and stupid kids are the ones you'll continue to deal with at a community college, you know! With the few exceptions and also the 40 year olds coming back to get some education

None, just don't get caught. You'll end up kicked out on the street, taking classes at the school, and trying to get into a study group.

That's not always true. There were a couple of full time faculty in the music department with just a Master's at my university.

No f***ing way.

At least, I'm 99% sure you don't need that here.

Nope.

The kids I'm talking about are kids who read at like a 3rd grade level in 10th grade.

They're not going to college.

They're not even gonna pass my class.

EVER.

You do know that you can go to community college without a HS diploma, right? Unless you only teach classes with prerequisites you will get the idiots in your class, I guarantee you.

Oh, and I'm fairly certain for most departments in CC(like math) you need a Masters to teach.

Your best bet is to teach at a private school if you still wanna teach kids.

Have to echo everyone else here. I did get a kick out of the initial post though, where you said you don't want to deal with lazy idiots but you... want to teach community college...

I'm pretty sure that any community college in Southern California, and definitely the ones in LA County, require at least a Master's.

If you get tenure, teaching becomes pants-optional.

Anri, if you fail them, you'll have to teach them again next year.

Also, it depends on the community college.

Some of them have deals with high schools where they put accelerated students through classes so they can get some college cred and finish college early.

some of them are horrible wastes

Community College isn't bad as long as you teach classes that are actually college level. For instance, I go to Community College because I'm poor. It still costs money to take classes though, so the majority of people won't be taking a class if they don't at least try to pass.

I unfortunately have to take a pre-algebra class because I couldn't remember any of my math skills from high school, it's been too long. But it's been refreshing me, and I'm naturally good at math, so I have like a 110% in the class, while everyone else is STUPID. However, in the rest of my classes, all college level, the students around me are pretty smart and not lazy. They're just poor like me.

another thing with CC- if you can teach night classes it will be almost entirely older people, not lazy kids.

Oh I go to classes in the morning and middle of the day, most of the students around are older than me (I'm only 21).

Maybe sign up to teach AP classes instead of basic? That way you can teach at the same grade level but the kids you deal with are almost sure to be more intelligent and more driven.

Depends on what you're teaching. My brother taught remedial math (like, equivalent of 9th grade algebra) at a community college with only a bachelor's degree. On the other hand, that's probably not what you want to restore your faith in humanity.

Basically, you need anything you'd need to teach the class in High School, minus the education degree.

So you could go teach anything you're already teaching right now.
