But really that game is absolute genius. I mean, at the base level it is probably the only legitimately scary game I've ever played, but when you go deeper it's really amazing what they did with that game. All the monsters representing a different part of James' psyche, the plot twist, the threat and symbolism of Pyramid Head, the nature of Maria. The historical society portion.
It really has so much depth. I don't like sounding all arty and douchey about it, but it has to be appreciated in that regard.
My only fault with it is that, aside from Pyramid Head, it isn't really scary. It's gloomy and moody and psychologically a load of bricks upon your soul, but not scary

Videogames should not be judged as good or not based on artistic merit alone, as that shouldn't the be point in the first place. 'Game' is right there in the name - fun should come first, and then everything else.

I don't think he was just talking about games, and he has a point.
Silent Hill 2 suffered from being too easy. 3 got it right with giving you too many enemies, forcing you to run away.
Yeah. Hard mode on SH2 is easier than easy mode on SH3. I remember my first time through on SH3, i totally didn't expect it to be that hard, playing on normal. But I lucked out because of this. I ran out of ammo before the last boss, and I had to kill the last boss with a Katana, doing so will unlock an SMG for your next playthrough. Also those hammerfist guys were impossible to kill, and if they ever hit you, you'd either die, or be inches from death. I'm sure the difficulty made it more scary, but I think without the difficulty, it still would've been the scariest in the series. Also, I love the connections to the first SH.
Oh yeah, DAT PLOT TWIST when Heather is in the car on the way to Silent Hill blew me away. Especially after playing 2, which had no real connection to 1, and then playing about half of 3 which didn't y seem to have a connection either. Then Heather reveals who she is and the entire game changes.
To me SH4 is scary in kind of a lame way. Not really my thing in general, that game. It's like, yes, we can put us in this zany stressful apartment, but uh... well it's not interesting to me. But we all have different taste and whatnot. I actually don't really dig SH3's story either, I'm a 1 and 2 man.
It'd actually be cool if they included SH1 in the collection touched up. I know they think putting PS1 games in HD is pointless, but these games often had PC versions you could play at high resolutions, which look a lot better than on Playstation.

Oh man, P_K, Dem ghosts? come on. Freaky freaky freaky. And some of the **** you'd see in the peephole. Then everything is so haunted at the end, augh. So ****ing scary.
silent hill 2 is brilliant in every area except gameplay, I really can't stand playing it unfortunately because of the way it controls and how bad the camera is. one of the best games I've ever watched on youtube though for sure :/

That was pretty scary.
Pyramid Head nearly killed me though, man - or caused my bladder to burst. I think I told this story in my writeup about the game...yeah, here it is:
21. Silent Hill 2
Man...
When I was playing this game, I lived in a flat (apartment) over the Pub/Restaurant my parents managed. It was a very long apartment, with one long corridor running through the middle of it. My nightmare for years was that I would get up in the night to go to the toilet (that was across said corridor), and that I would look down it and as I was looking down it, a flash of lightning would hit and I would see Pyramid Head, silhouetted there. Subsequently, I wanted to go to the toilet during the ngiht A LOT during that time, and was always terrified to get up as a result.
