A survey of 1,000 hard drug users in the region found that 87 per cent had hepatitis C and 17 per cent were HIV-positive

Goddamn, there isn't much else proof needed that at least providing these people with a place they won't be using dirty needles is probably a good idea

Nice.

On another note...why were the conservatives trying to shut this down in the first place? Usually the Canadian conservatives don't take a strong stance on social issues. Was it just a funding objection?

It's really weird. They've claimed that Insite is, at various times, a health hazard, and a safe haven for criminals. Harper has spent millions of dollars on studies -- the majority of which came back with results he ignored -- and appeals. I don't think Harper cares about where the money comes from, as Insite is funded by the city of Vancouver.

This is a great idea by Canada.

Round up all of the drug addicts, even give them free drugs, and then arrest every last one of them. Pretty brilliant, really.

**** yes.

And yeah, metroid, I'm pretty confused about the Conservative government's hardball approach to this one. Crime is one area where they tend to be pretty draconian, though, so it kinda makes sense. (Although this is really more a health issue than a crime one.)

Harper's stance is that he wants programs/laws that get rid of crime rather than reduce it with special programs.
