My accounting teacher likes to announce homework assignments in e-mail with no class warnings. He did it thrice this week (added an extra problem due Monday, extra problem Wednesday, and an assignment due Monday when there was originally no homework due). He announced the last one today at 1 am.

This is incredibly annoying, because I have other things to do with my other classes, and the other teachers don't leave me guessing with my work. With exams for two of my classes last week, extra unexpected homework (busywork, because I can't say learned anything from it) just added more stress.

I've never had a teacher do this, but then again, I was in community college before. Is this common in universities?

Depends on what the syllabus says. If it makes mention of it, he can do it that way, if not, he can't. At least that's how it is at my college.

The syllabus makes no mention of assignment dates. It only says that the class involves work. Well, I know that first-hand!

I've seen that done before on rare occasion, although more frequently I'll see things like extensions.
