Who's the protagonist and who's the antagonist in Ryu/Ken? They have equal status as player characters in every game they appear in together, so you can't say the player's perspective ever favors one over the other.

In a case where it's purely equal like that, the protagonist is usually whoever you sympathize with more. Though it typically just ends up both and thus whoever you're talking about.

So if you're talking about Ryu, Ken is his antagonist. If you're talking about Ken, Ryu is his antagonist.

Though I'd probably say Ryu's the protagonist, anyway, since the story focuses on him more overall.

A game that allows the player to choose different characters to control is obviously going to have a malleable protagonist situation. I don't think there's a right answer, and for the purpose of the nomination form, I don't think it's all that important.

Ryu's stories in Street Fighter are largely more important and the focus, while Ken mostly just adds to his story and his own personal story has little to do with the overarching plotline.

The story doesn't really focus on either of them tbqh. It's usually about Shadaloo, and apart from the Alpha series that storyline has mostly been about Chun Li and Guile, not Ryu and Ken.

Technically the protagonist in the story is the character who started out one way with certain needs, and changes over the story and discovers he/she needs something else. There might be other characters like this, but in a traditional sense it's fairly easy to pick the main guy.

So characters like Mario, Link, and so on are not actually protagonists, since they virtually start and finish as the same person (at least you can't tell if there are any differences). They would be considered the hero character (the one we root for). Also the main character (the one the story focuses on).

I'm in a creative writing drama class this semester. I don't know how well these definitions hold up, but my professor said that the protagonist is the character with the strongest goal, and the antagonist/s is/are the person/people who interfere with the protagonist.

One of the first things you would learn in any type of class that would teach it, would be the differences between the Protagonist, Main Character, and Hero.

For the most part, they are all the same. However, think about a movie like The Mighty Ducks. The Protagonist is obviously Gordon Bombay, as he changes over the movie. He hates kids, and cares about his career above all else, but as the movie goes on he changes that. He is also the primary character the movie focuses on. However, Adam Banks would fit the hero bill the best (the one we are rooting for, the one who comes out and pushes the team to victory). Charlie could fit this bill too.

In a game like say, Twilight Princss, Link is the hero, but Midna is probably the most suited to be the protagonist. One of the issues with games is that in many cases they fail to follow all the complexities that you have when making a story. Like, you can only extrapolate so much from Bowser kidnapping the princes (again).

Central character does not mean protagonist. In most cases they are the same. I don't know a lot about SF story line or whatever so I can't actually confirm of deny the claim he is a protagonist, but this reasoning behind him being it is flawed.

That would be Ryu, yes. M. Bison's (The principal antagonist) intended target throughout the Alpha games is Ryu. He's definitely the protagonist of the original SF because, well, he's the only playable character who actually participated in the tournament (Ken is only in the game to provide an opponent for two player games, he didn't actually participate). SF2 is a bit fuzzy mostly because the details of SF2 as a whole are a bit fuzzy. Same with SF4.

Alex would be the main protagonist of SF3 though, I'll give you that.

But basically what makes a protagonist a protagonist is being a central character with whom the audience is intended to identify. He doesn't have to develop or anything like that.

It's all nice and fine to get deep into literary analysis, but Chrono, dude, you're taking it to a point that it doesn't need to be taken. If we were in a college course discussing the structure of a particular drama, then sure, go as far with the terms as you want.

But we're not. We're on a video game message board discussing the terms in their most general, accepted meanings.

Sometimes you just have to know when to pull back the debate, and realize when you need to tell somebody that insists Knuckles isn't an antagonist, "Dude, shut up, you're wrong."

To clear up one alarming misconception about protagonists and antagonists...

Protagonists don't need to change to be a protagonist. That's just plain incorrect. Plenty of protagonists in any sort of story don't go through a change of any sort. Protagonists are just the one who the conflict revolves around.

For a story, you need a conflict. Hence, the protagonist deals with the conflict. Whoever is in conflict with the protagonist is the antagonist.

It's really that easy.
