Also, vote spikes aren't enough proof to disqualify votes, even if they're suspicious.

I'm not saying it is. The idea would be for GameSpot to to use information I don't have access to to figure out where the votes came from. I don't mean make up a reason to get rid of the votes. If they are legit, they are legit and should stay counted. I just find it very hard to believe they aren't stuffed votes.

Only read first 20 or so posts, but I don't think its really significant cheating at all. 4chan is just so active that you post a link to it at any time of the day and hundreds if not over a thousand new people will see it and go vote for it.

Well yeah, but it's still not enough. Leon's problem is that his stathead mentality is "Hey, the winner in this match wasn't cookie cutter, must be vote stuffing!"

Not quite. The problem here is that your obvious anti-Nintendo bias makes you want to believe all of this is legit. Despite the fact that Luigi had little to no problem destroying fodder the first couple rounds, Yoshi is apparently weak enough to lose to Einstein or Einstein is apparently legitimately that strong, despite the fact that there is very little reason to believe either of those is true. GameSpot doesn't hate Nintendo. They don't love it as much as we do, but they don't hate it.

I'm not arguing "stats." I'm arguing "common sense." Einstein legitimately beating Yoshi on a major website goes against common sense, and I'm pretty sure nearly everyone realizes this. And I'm pretty sure nearly everyone realizes that 4chan isn't above cheating, and they know how to do it.

From: Vlado | #043
Yeah, pointing out simple facts that destroy Leon's "logic" is not "reasonable argument" at all.

It would be if you were actually doing that. All you're basically saying is, "You can't prove there was cheating, so it must be legit."

That's a real sound argument there.

My bracket has Einstein and Launchpad meeting in the finals because I knew this was what 4chan was going to do.

Regardless, being "unpredictable" is only one aspect of a good contest. The format, like doing all the matches at once, making the matches go on for way too long, GameSpot putting absolutely no effort whatsoever into promoting it, makes GameSpot's contests pretty bad.

What the hell? The format is fine, all matches at once is fine, matches lasting long is fine. Not everything has to be like on Gamefaqs to be good.

And what more should Gamespot do to "promote" it? There's already a link on the front page that's up at almost all times. They can't clutter their front page by actually putting the polls there, they're one of the biggest game sites, they aren't Gamefaqs.

Dogmeats rally is 4chan because they wanted to get rid of Luigi and Alyx who were perceived as threats. He'll lose that support once he goes against one of their guys.

And Otacon will just be killed next round.

they're one of the biggest game sites

And yet we can't get a match that's running for 2-3 days more than 30,000 total votes.

If there's a link to the contest on GameSpot's home page, I can't find it.

All matches at once is bad because it discourages a lot of people from voting in every match, particularly because you have to go through 32 different pages to do it in the first round. Matches being long is bad because there's only so much that happens in 4-7 days. These contests have very little drama and very little back and forth. They're mostly decided after the first day, so we're basically sitting here with the result decided for nearly a week before we can have new matches. Even a match like Diddy/Vivi, which was close on paper, was never back and forth. Vivi basically sat at 50.5% the entire match after the first day.

If there were an option where you could cast your vote for all the matches on the same page at once, it would be a little more user-friendly. In the later rounds it's not as much of an issue because there's only a handful of matches to vote on, but the format of the contest isn't conducive to getting people to vote in it, and the vote totals pretty much show that.

That's true. If it's a match 4chan cares about, it'll get votes.

But look at Vivi/Otacon (a match 4chan did not care about). Barely 40,000 after running for, what, 3-4 days?

And most of the votes are cast within that first day anyway.

The fact that a GameSpot contest can't even manage 30,000 votes in 24 hours (and it won't get much more than that from here on out) when we can get a lot more than that in 12 is pretty sad regardless.

I don't even really care who wins GameSpot's contests. It's not about that. I want to like them because I like video game contests, but they're so poorly administered that it's hard to enjoy them. GameSpot at least improved somewhat this year by drastically reducing the length of the contest, so that's a start.

Not to mention Launchpad vs Einstein finals is just as predictable at this point.

Two bandwagon characters in the final is about as exciting as Link and Cloud.

Even then though, the contest shouldn't just be about who wins, but how the entire contest plays out. The low vote total kind of indicates a lack of caring.
