I've always wondered about that, if the Universe is finite there must be some kind of wall to contain everything right, maybe not since the Universe is all ****ed up but still, I like to think that there's a wall.
And if it's infinite well I still don't understand.
Universe, boggling my mind since 1991.

dont worry. we'll only be less able to answer this question over time as more and more galaxies fly away from our own such that the only thing we'll be able to see in the observable universe is our galaxy!
the universe is a very soul crushing place ;_;

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out

This is literally how it would work in a finite universe.
A finite universe would not have walls, but would rather be a curved three dimensional space existing inside four dimensional space.
This is not possible for us to visualize, so reducing the dimensions allows us to. Imagine a two dimensional universe that is shaped like the surface of a sphere. Finite, but no boundaries.

There are no walls. A wall is a divider. A divider divides two things. That would imply there is something beyond the wall. There is nothing that is not in the universe.
To look at it another way, our universe contains all space and time. A wall divides two spaces. In order to be considered a wall, it must have space on either side of it. And if there is space on the opposite side of it, then that is a part of our universe as well. Not to mention that the wall, existing in physical space, would also be a part of our universe and not something outside of it.
the concept of space holds no meaning outside the boundaries of the universe.
it is like saying "where is the color blue on the number line?" the question is irreverent, blue is not a number.
they tell us the universe is expanding, it must be expanding into something! or at the very least, if you could outrun the expanding universe we'd want to know what you would find there.
this explanation sounds oddly familiar, something similar to "there was no time before God, so we don't need to worry about how he started existing. he just always was.' I decided from a young age that that was not worth considering and I'm not going to accept it if science goes the same route!
Also, my understanding is we understand more or less how to make technology that would let you outrun the expanding universe(well technically you can already do that but hey), the only problem is that subspace travel or whatever it's called involves destroying the universe you leave from >.>;

When they say the universe is expanding, they don't mean that the universe is finite in size and getting larger, but rather than the matter in the universe is getting farther apart.

I'm not familiar with any of this, do you have a link?

In that case why do they expect the universe to eventually collapse in on itself? The further apart things get, the less they will have any gravitational effect on each other right?

The model for a closed universe assumes that gravity will slow and stop the expansion before the universe expands far enough for gravity to become negligible.
That said, few scientists expect this to happen currently as observations do not support this.

Well technically, outrunning the universal expansion is simple physics assuming that everything is expanding at an equal rate, because you are part of the universe, so a single thrust in the right direction and you will eventually outrun it.
who knows what could be out there, it could be another mcdonalds, a bunch of walls, nothing, or even randy savage -- the main issue is, we'll never know.
not until we break this universe to bits and pieces to find out how what makes it tick
