i got two books for 5 bucks, just picked some with interesting titles

i so picked up one called reforming our universities.

i probably should have paid closer attention

on the back cover there is positive reviews from the likes of newt gingrich

in the book cover "fight liberal intolerance.... intimidate students into ideological submission to leftists professors"

your

I see those liberal genes are as smart as they say.

You're not at all just going along with the herd. You're not at all influenced to say this is a "crazy person book" because of how they've made people think. You have a good reason that you became atheist, not just because it became the hot thing. You came up with it all on your own, just like everyone else. You are a true champion of justice.

You know, except for knowing basic grammar rules or being able to understand what a book is about.

You can think Obama and the progressives for that. He has made it very clear that the right is his enemy, and has done all he can, especially among minorities, to convince people that white republicans are the reason for all their problems. Meanwhile they control the media and therefore have the power to make people think whatever they want. Stuff like The Daily Show has made our generation completely ignorant of the real issues and tricks them into believing his idealogy.

I can't remember if you go to UBC or SFU with me, but it's the same thing at SFU from what I've seen.

Well, kind of. If there are any conservatives in my classes, they tend not to speak up. But when conservative viewpoints on social issues are brought up in class, everyone treats them like a complete joke that can't really be taken seriously.

You can say the same thing about being conservative and what the republican party has become. That's why America is so screwed right now. Neither political party that stands a chance of being in power is an appealing option. It's damn scary when you're vote for who runs the country comes down to a lesser of two evils.

Having spent almost no time in American universities, I can only go by what I hear but...my inclination is to call conspiracy theories crazy, yes. I tend to assume the Americans on the left saying that 9/11 was an inside job are crazy. I tend to assume the Americans on the right who claim that universities are a plot to brainwash students crazy. The one time I visited my sister in Princeton, some of her fellow grad students were right wing; they didn't seem to be brainwashed by the left.

A few isolated cases of discrimination seems plausible to me, however. The animosity between Democrats and Republicans in the US right now is higher than the animosity between catholics and protestants in Ireland. It's really weird. And with the situation in that state, sure I bet there's cases of political party discrimination; it's not like there aren't regular cases of discrimination based on things like sex and race--academics are humans.

Yeah, that stuff really drives me nuts. That people are still saying Bush did it to go get oil. Wtf? How can people be so ignorant? If it was about taking their oil, we would decimate them and take it. If it was Bush's war, Obama would have taken all the troops back. Instead he just added a third war to the bill, again enforcing the stereotype of "world police." It's just amazing.

Prefect example of a conspiracy theory.

Please point me to the video of president Obama telling a room of minorities that white republicans are the enemy and the reason for their problems.

I seem to recall a lot more videos of Obama saying he would need to work with Republicans (and plenty of evidence that he has been--Obama and Boehner have collaborated on a number of bills).

But are we talking about legitimate discrimination or are we talking about a bunch of crybabies like guiga here who create this fantasy world where one person disagreeing with them equates to a far-reaching conspiracy of systematic oppression.

I would wager on the latter more often than not.

High five, people who went to UBC!

And yeah, political views are going to vary a little by what class you're in. For instance, if you take a Women's Studies course, you'll probably find certain opinions met with hostility. People in petrolium engineering might have a different outlook than people in sustainability studies. Etc.

Yeah that happens.

You also get discriminated against for being a Democrat, Black, White, tall, red-haired, funny-voiced, and even for having a weird walking stance.

Welcome to the real world, where people judging you based on your actions and opinions is TYPICAL HUMAN NATURE and not some sort of cancer to society that must be eradicated.

No, it's not.

Forget the American political system--it really warps the meaning of liberal and conservative. The words "Liberal" and "Conservative" literally just mean freedom and caution.

Liberal means being for the reduction of regulations and for the introduction of new things. This means everything from reducing business regulations to reducing environmental regulations to allowing gays to marry.

Conservative means holding back. Conserving the environment, regulating businesses, being careful with spending, and keeping things like the good ol' days.

For instance, most five-year-olds are very conservative; they are afraid of change, and want everything to stay exactly the way they know it. Most teenagers are very liberal. They don't understand why adults have all these "stupid rules", and why they can't just do what they want.

Neither of these should be pejorative terms, and most places outside the United States, they're not. Neither of the major American parties correspond particularly well to the actual definition of these words--the one party that does line up quite well is that Libertarians are very liberal. (In fact, that's probably where they got their name; imagine that!)
