The argument was British people saying freedom of speech was a bad thing people should not have.

Thankfully, I've got the freedom to say that people who believe that are lesser human beings.

No one said the guy should go to jail for singing kung fu fighting PER SAY but they were against free speech, which is the specific thing that PROTECTS people who sing kung fu fighting.

Some countries have hate speech laws.

Though getting arrested for kung fu fighting is still pretty funny

A guy should be arrested for hurting his feelings over the internet? Some people are too sensitive.

No. It wasn't. People were arguing that hate speech should be punishable. Note that not a single person condemned the man singing "Kung-Fu Fighting" at a karaoke bar for being guilty of that.

Why? Because it adds a nuance to how America views free speech? Nothing extreme is good and the day everyone in the world gets that in their heads will be a great one

That article is so stupid.

"Herp derp they would never say that to my face!"

Of course not. That's why they're saying it online where it can achieve a reaction without physical retaliation. If you're providing that reaction, you're doing nothing but feeding into it.

It can't "hate" oh free speech; it can restrict it. Every country has some restriction on what most people consider free speech. This is not a bad thing.

Saying that hate speech should be punishable is equivalent to saying that it was okay for the kung fu guy to be punished. Even if you think that the specific situation of the kung fu guy being arrested was too extreme, too bad, that's what comes with not having an extreme sense of freedom.

Even if you think that only sometimes, in very rare and extreme cases, should hate speech be punished, you have to realize that the boundary WILL be pushed. Give them an inch and they will take a mile, etc., no matter how conservative of a boundary you set, if you give any sort of exception to freedom of speech, it effectively threatens the entire freedom as a whole.

This has nothing to with nationality, and everything to do with the nature of trolling, but I honestly have no sympathy for cowards, who just desire to make other people miserable, receiving the consequences for their actions. The severity of the punishment is debatable, but I don't see how anyone could disagree that someone mocking another persons death in full view of their family deserves to get away scot free.
