From: SpeedYoshi | #035 This can definately be trolling
No, that's definitely just being a dick.
If it's something that most people would feel is justifiable to get angry over, then it's not really trolling. The key to trolling is that your target is humiliated through their own reaction.

From: ExThaNemesis | #041 Yeah but if the person doesn't just go "oh ok" and is still angry, were you still trolling or are you now a dick?
Once he realizes that the persona he was mad at earlier for saying all this dumb stuff was a fake, he shouldn't care about it anymore. After that, he can still be mad at you for trolling him in the first place, but that is beyond the scope of the original trolling.

Ah, but then when you get furious at your cat for ruining your clean car and then get embarrassed by it later (because lol you for getting mad at a dumb animal), were you not trolled, then?

in that situation I don't think we're assuming that the person is getting "furious" at their cat
just more of an "hey I just cleaned that god damn it"
From: Rad Link 5 | #058 I don't even know what the beef with you two is. I was just correcting people who think trolls and sociopaths are the same thing.
I swear, this is exactly it. These are the people I hang out with.

I'm going to also say that the person who caused your embarrassing reaction had to have intent.
A cat isn't intending to make you make a fool of yourself by yelling at him. I don't give cats that much credit.

i'd ask extha to testify on behalf of my personality since he has met me in person, but i literally trolled him (and him me) the entire time we were together so that's not a good idea
swift got the worst of it though
one afternoon with extha and i and he literally had a breakdown
I still say cats aren't conscious of their dickery. And further I don't think they're smart enough to go "he'd look like such an idiot if I could get him to yell at me right now."
I mean the whole reason you'd look like an idiot for yelling at a cat is the idea that the cat doesn't understand.

From: foolmor0n | #072 They're different, but not mutually exclusive, and that throws a lot of people off
So where do you think the line is drawn then? Am I a troll if it's not in my personality to snap someone's pencil in half just to make them angry or no?

Cats understand a lot. One time my cat walked into my room and I said "**** off" in a completely calm, natural voice and he turned around and left without a word.

like I said, I don't think you can really troll people with actions. Especially ones that are directly harming them or their property.

Also, I'm pretty sure no one's going to be "humiliated" when they get pissed that you broke their pencil for no reason. Everyone in the room is going to agree that you're just a dick.
From: ExThaNemesis | #077 So where do you think the line is drawn then? Am I a troll if it's not in my personality to snap someone's pencil in half just to make them angry or no?
On individual actions, there is no line. There is a clear distinction between trolling and just being a dick, as mer and I have explained.
But you can be both a troll (someone who trolls sometimes) and a sociopath (someone who doesn't give a **** about others) at the same time. Or you could be just a troll... or just a sociopath. I dunno where the line would be in defining whether you are a troll or not, I guess that's more up to you.
From: Mer_Mer_Yes_Mer | #079 like I said, I don't think you can really troll people with actions. Especially ones that are directly harming them or their property.
I think there's a lot of examples where you can troll with actions. I think that most pranks would be considered trolling. I think a great example is that prank war topic that Revenus linked to the other day. Those two kids were trolling the hell out of each other.

That topic is actually a perfect example of when pranks cross the line and are no longer mere trolling.

I wouldn't say that's trolling at all, that's just being a ****ing nuisance. >_>
From: Mer_Mer_Yes_Mer | #078 Cats understand a lot. One time my cat walked into my room and I said "**** off" in a completely calm, natural voice and he turned around and left without a word.
Could have just been great timing on his urge to leave (my dogs do this all the time, where someone will give them a verbal cue they don't know, and they'll give the appropriate response out of pure luck, and then you can't get them to do it again), but if we're saying cats are that smart, then yes, a cat could, conceivably, troll someone.
But I still say they're not that smart.

It was not facetious at all, and Jason certainly shouldn't be humiliated for getting pissed over that. If your going to call something like that trolling I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

Although I think pranks in general are an entirely different category because when you pull a prank on someone, your intention of annoying or upsetting them is pretty much entirely obvious.

No, because putting alarm clocks all over his room was done to specifically ruin his day. There was nothing insincere about it.
The guy could've gone right up to the roommate's face and said "I hid alarm clocks all over your room to drive you crazy" and it wouldn't help anything because the roommate would STILL have to spend all night looking for the alarm clocks and his day would STILL be ruined.
Once someone knows that you are trolling, then no more damage can be done. That is one of the requirements.

From: Rad Link 5 | #067 I'm implying that they're not conscious of what huge dicks they are. It's just their nature.
when a cat craps in a litter box and doesn't bury it, it knows it's being a dick
its instinct for them to bury it, not doing so means they're purposely sending you a message
we also babysat a cat when i was a kid and our friends moved (we kept it until they could settle in at their new house) and it maliciously attacked my dad and nobody else the entire time we had it. it would jump into bed with my dad and attack him while he was asleep. it was the sweetest cat to me and everyone else in the family. it scratched my dad badly enough that he had to be hospitalized for cat scratch fever. the thing is, it never attacked my dad in front of anyone so he looked like a tard when he talked about how much he hated the cat since nobody believed him until the bad scratch. that cat knew what he was doing.

uh what? no. if you walk into into a classroom and snap everybody's pencil the entire room is going to be like "wow that guy is a douchebag."
The worst part about the state of the word epic is that now you can't even use it as a noun because people seriously don't know it can be used that way.
Tell anyone you're reading an epic and see the reaction you get. Awful.
