On one hand it's nice to be able to say "that dude is trolling" and have the majority of people understand you.

But then it's so annoying to hear it used incorrectly. I just feel that if you don't normally use internet lingo, you should at least verse yourself in it properly before you start throwing it around recklessly.

It's not even things like that.

The way people use it these days, it's as if any time a person gets annoyed, angry, or upset about something, people will say they "got trolled."

Maybe that's just a local phenomenon, but it's something I see/hear all the time and it's ****ing annoying.

If I walk up to some random dude and be like "hey you're ugly and fat as ****!" and run away, I'm not "trolling" him, I'm just being a ****ing dick.

if I wash my car, and then my cat jumps on the hood and tracks her muddy pawprints all over it, my cat is not "trolling" me. She's just being a little *****.

I see the word get used in contexts like that all the time, it's so ridiculous.

99% of the time people use the word "trolling" they use it wrong, so we should all just cut our losses and agree not to use it.

I dunno, I think it can be amusing when using it in that context, because obviously the animal is not trolling you, but the action itself is troll-worthy.

but that's the thing, it's not.

You can't really troll someone with an action.

The crucial element that makes it "trolling" is that what you're saying has to be entirely insincere and only done for the reaction.

It's not like you can track muddy pawprints onto something and be just kidding about it. You either physically did it or you didn't. >_>

I dunno, I think you can troll with actions intended solely to anger or annoy. Like if I go out of my way to break someone's pencil in half for no reason other than to upset them, that's being a 'troll'. Sure you might just want to be parsimonious and say it's 'being a dick' but troll also fits.

I guess I just have a huge issue with this concept that, if my intention is to piss someone off, and I successfully do so, I've somehow "owned" them and they should feel embarrassed, if what I did was something that it would be perfectly reasonable for someone to get upset about, and my motivation behind doing it was completely sincere.

But I mean, if you go by that logic then why isn't someone who is "getting trolled" over a message board perfectly entitled to be angered by whatever is making them angry the way that it was presented to them?

The main definition for trolling I've always seen and lived by is that it's about convincing people you're sincere when you really aren't, and having them get upset about it.

"convincing people you're sincere when you aren't" is the more crucial element to it imo.

if they bought into it as being sincere when it actually wasn't, no.

If I make a topic about how BrokenCYDE is the greatest band of all time and get into a heated debate with people who think I'm entirely serious (when in reality I'm laughing and don't believe any of the **** I'm saying) THAT is trolling.

If I make a topic that just insults some user and lays into them and criticizes them to the point of them responding or getting upset, that's just me being a dick.

I think the key to trolling is that your victim gets mad at an "imaginary" target that isn't yourself.

So if I go up to some guy and punch him in the face, he is mad at me, the guy attached to the hand that hit him in the face. He might be pissed, but that was not trolling.

But if I have an argument with someone and I just start saying inflammatory things I don't believe, then the guy will get mad not at me, but the imaginary persona I created that believes this ridiculous stuff.

Another distinction is that if you can't remove the hate from yourself by saying "I'm just trolling" then it's not trolling. I can't punch a guy in the face and say "I'm just trolling" and then we're all good. But I CAN say a bunch of fake stuff to piss someone off then later say "I'm just trolling" and he will go "oh ok".

I'll agree, I especially find it weird when trolling is used in non internet contexts. Like when somebody says a gamemaker is trolling with a hard boss, or a film maker is trolling with a plot twist, etc etc.

But since these guys weren't actually directing games and movies with angering the internet in mind, I don't think trolling makes sense in these contexts, or maybe I'm just trollin'.

Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.

"Trolling" isn't simply "harmful statements". Intentionally insulting/libelous statements are "flaming".

This is the definition I live by.
