resolution? the resolution is probably at your screen resolution, which could be like 1920 by 1080 or something ridiculous like that.

recorded at 1:1 resolution with your screen and uncompressed, I could see that being a possibility. Don't know how to help you, though.

It's all about the codec. I don't know much about PC recording, but I do record footage from my Wii for my Let's Play, and it's recommended to use a lossless codec, which means no lost quality but huge amount of hard drive space. I assume the TV and movie usenet groups and torrent sites do something similar, recording at lossless and then converting the video under xvid/h.624.

What program are you using to record your screen, anyway? It's likely recording as lossless, in which case you convert the video to a lossy format like h.624 using a program like Handbrake or MeGUI, or just record in that format to begin with, though it's safer to do the former, even though it's more work.

When I was using FRAPS to record some stuff to put on Youtube I had a similar issue. I think if you just use Windows Movie Maker you can compress it down pretty easily.

You need to encode the video. In Virtual Dub you can choose a codec to compress it with. Once you've done that you can save it as a new file.

Cool, I found a tutorial online.
Using the xvid codec, apparently that compresses quite nicely

load your video in VDub, go Video -> Compression, then choose one of the codecs available to you, then there should be options or settings available on that codec, which can have some target for quality or size that you can mess around with.

OK so I downloaded VDub. Do I have to remake the videos? I'm trying to find a way to compress the .avi files that I already have

Load the video, then from the menu go Videos -> Compression

You may not have the proper codecs, so I'd recommend downloading codecs here: http://www.cccp-project.net/ x624 is probably best.

At any rate, VirtualDub is nice for a lot of things, but it's a bit outdated and there's other programs that do its features better. I'd recommend HandBrake as I hear it's simple to use. That said, you can still do it with VirtualDub doing the above.

Edit: See you went with xvid, which also works well though it's also a bit outdated. But if you're messing around or it's nothing huge to show off, you're better off sticking to what works. God knows I've played with all this crap for too long.

also I think Wylvane means 264, but not sure. quick search of 624 has it as some PSP proprietary thing as far as I can tell.

I remember having difficulty with the codec situation also. just downloaded one of the codec packs (K-Lite I think) and that seemed to solve my issues.

no I believe you have to install them or whatever. downloading and installing a codec pack is just a quick solution to get a variety of codecs available to you in VDub.

which is why I recommended downloading a codec pack! quick and easy solution.
