It's kinda weird because this isn't my first time playing the game either...probably closer to the fourth our fifth (although I've never beat it). I hated on it before for the story compared to 4 and 6, but right now I think I'm having more fun with it than I did with either of those.
I'm still really early on, but the job system kicks ass (like always) and I really dig the characters much more than I thought I did.
Galuf and Gilgamesh are super awesome, and I feel like they add a lot to the game, especially for how little dialogue they have. Bartz, Lenna, Krille, and to a lesser extent Faris, are kind of just "there."
Man... I'm really gonna have to play FFVII again too. As it stands right now, I kind of hate the game.
I didn't hate it when I first played it though. I picked it up around 2003 after playing Kingdom Hearts because Cloud seemed like a pretty cool (looking) dude in that game. I had only beaten FFVIII and FFX at the time, although I'd played IV through VI. I remember enjoying the game thoroughly and thinking that it held up pretty damn well over the years... until I hung out on this board for a couple years and looked at how people honestly thought it was the best game ever. At first it just baffled me... but later it somehow turned to anger. I was actually mad at people for liking the game so much... although part of that was probably because FFVIII was HATED here as well.
Now I just think of anything in FFVII and all sorts of negative thoughts and feelings come up. I think I have to fix that.
ExDeath and Gilgamesh are the only top tier characters in the game.
I sort of geared the game toward a Faris/Bartz romantic thing, and it made it even better that I lost Faris in the final battle. They should have taken a bigger risk there, but I can also see why they didn't, considering it took them all the way til 9 to have a good romance and then hit one out of the park with 10.

Faris is my favourite. Probably one of my top 10 in the series.
That doesn't take much given that Cloud is one of the worst protagonists in FF history.
True. I just felt like pointing it out since he doesn't seem to get much (any) love.
Galuf: So why'd you come here when you knew there would be no way to get back? Bartz: No reason, really....
Eh travels to other planets with no way of getting home and doesn't afraid of anything. Not to mention, he's getting better all the time!
Anyways, I'm into the new content now, game is still awesome. I honestly thought I was near the end of it before, since I played the first 8 or so hours of this game so many times, I thought I had played MOST of it. Turns out that it was basically just the first act. Happy to know there is still a ton of game left.
