21. Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2

Platform: XBLA
Release Date: 2008
Video:

The original Geometry Wars is notable for being the first legitimate downloadable game on the 360. Its sequel beats the hell out of the original in every way, offering six unique modes with great leaderboard support. It's the premiere dual stick shooter, a genre that has really exploded over the past few years. It's flashy and exciting with cool music and great intensity. I can't recommend it enough.

This isn't a hallowed title on the level of a Mario or a Zelda, but I'd say it's just as important given how big both dual stick shooters and downloadable games are getting.

Well, there goes my favorite game. It is weird though, Dragon Warrior is my favorite game and yet I can give it an almost completely objective score, subtracting points for it faults. Someone asked me when it came up for rating in the Rate the Game topics how I could give my favorite game a 6. TBH, I'm not sure how I can be so objective with it, I just am, but it stays as my favorite game of all time, and I don't think it will ever be taken down.

2d is such a muddy term anyway. include SRPGs and you've gotta include Diablo 2, which in my mind is 3d. then there's Warcraft. at that point I don't even know what 2d means. sorry, neon.

I'd have a hard time calling FF7 3d -- or any FF on the PS1, really -- but most people would differentiate between SNES FF and PS1 FF.

SFIV is definitely a 2-D fighter. It has all the characteristics of one. There's a clear distinction between a 2-D fighter and a 3-D fighter, much moreso than most other genres.

Honourable Mention: Sega

This list has a big gaping hole: Sega games. I feel like I'm missing something but I'm not even sure yet; its beat em ups are good but not legendary; Gunstar Heroes never really made a huge splash; I don't know enough about Shining Force to count it and Phantasy Star never seemed to resonate on the same level of Square's RPGs. I had a SMS and a Genesis so it's not like I'm clueless on its games, but nothing really seemed like an all-time game outside of Sonic.

So, board 8, what am I missing?

I would consider something that uses little toons like Warcraft 3, Balder's Gate, or Icewindale to be more 2D. For things in the genre, it would not be until things like Kotor, Neverwinter Nights, etc where I would say it's 3D

Sonic 1-3+K are a big deal. I know from past topics you aren't a Sonic fan but they are some of the most important games from the 16 bit era.

Shining Force, Earthworm Jim, and Shinobi III come to mind immediately. Streets of Rage 2 is often considered the best beat em up, or at least second best behind TMNT 4. I don't know how successful Ristar was but it was certainly quite good also.

Sonic's on here, don't worry. it's just a matter of picking a game.

SOR2's the only one that's stood out otherwise. I feel weird including so many SNES games and so few Genesis games, but then I think the SNES was a much more accomplished system.

My family pawned my SNES when I was eight, so most of my game experience growing up was at my friend's house on his Sega Genesis. I'm sure that puts me in a nostalgia bias situation but when I put the Genesis and SNES libraries next to each other I think the Genesis does quite well. They're very close in my mind.

One thing also worth mentioning is that the Genesis was considered the better system for sports games. Of course those things don't matter now, all kind of outdated and definitely not essential. NHL Hockey for the Genesis strikes me as notable as far as 16 bit sports games go, though.

It seems crazy to me that Third Strike isn't the most popular game in the series.

Not really crazy when you think about it. When SF2 changed the fighting game genre, it was most famous for zoning. You know TIGERTIGERTIGERTIGER? 3S reduced that to only footsies. It was no longer SF. Why was SF4 so popular? Surprise surprise! Zoning was back!

Third Strike isn't the most popular game in the series for two simple reasons: It was released at the end of the arcade craze (I only got to play New Generations in arcades because my local arcade closed down before Second Impact ever came out), and for several years, SF3 was a Dreamcast exclusive.

SF3 never had a chance.

Well, there are more reasons than that, but those are the two biggest.

Losing a lot of the popular characters hurt SF3, too.

They weren't even going to have Ryu and Ken originally either until fan clamoring forced them to put them back in.

Why are Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on here?

Are you trying to scare people away or something? Do you want people to ostracize us as weirdos and nerds who have strange obsessions with gameplay as slow as a slug or as dated as a record player?

Can't you just change this to "The Top 50 Games I Want More Young Whippersnappers to Actually Like"?

20. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Platform: PS1
Release Date: 1997
Video:

Symphony of the Night took Super Metroid's formula and went to town. An exp system, weapons, warp points and one of the craziest secrets ever, the UPSIDE DOWN CASTLE. I bet there are tons of people who beat this game not even knowing that they had only done half of it.

Most people point to SOTN as taking the Metroid formula and adding RPG elements, but I think SOTN was notable for more than just that. It took nonlinear exploration and made it creepy and haunting. Super Metroid had an atmosphere to it, but it wasn't flat out creepy like SOTN's was. A killer atmospheric soundtrack and good art design helped it along. RPG elements are nice and all but I don't think people came to this game for the gameplay. If they did, they would have played the superior handheld sequels! Those games can't touch SOTN's atmosphere but do improve on the sometimes-broken gameplay. Seriously, you shouldn't be able to do what those speed runs do.

SotN's the right choice for main castlevania representative.

I still think people go overboard on comparing it to super metroid, because really the only idea the games share is that they're both platformers with an automap. Besides that, they're on opposite ends of the spectrum in most aspects i can think of:

* The gameplay is extremely different (controls, equipment systems, shooting vs melee, sotn's magic systems, puzzle vs action),
* The overall presentation is completely different (story vs exposition, inclusion of characters, type of fantasy involved),
* The graphical style is completely different (tile based vs gothic art)
* The zone structure is very different (quantity, size, setting, all are opposites),
* and come to think about it, the automaps are very different as well.

This. We might as well be comparing RE4 to Metroid games in that case (seriously, that's how it felt to me when I played RE4 for the first time a few months ago - it felt like a Metroid game where the emphasis on puzzle solving, bright colors, and space tech flair were replaced with all-out action, "photorealism", and a rural setting).

All I'm trying to say is that if Dragon Warrior 1 is the 20th-something 2D game that everyone must play if they are starting out with video games, they'd probably have second thoughts about the entire thing.

Let's see if tranny can redeem himself with the next 20 or so.
