9. Benjamin Linus (LOST)

In the words of Michael Emerson, he first went on LOST to do a guest appearance back during season two, and four years later became an Emmy winner for the outstanding portrayal of Benjamin Linus, having long-outlived the lifespan his character was initially supposed to have. The thing I love about Ben is the fact that he's been such a dynamic character over the years. We're first introduced to him as this guy who happens to be living on the island and gets caught in one of Rousseau's traps, leading to him being held captive by the Oceanic Survivors. Now, during this time, he's already pretty much creepy, and he seems to go out of his way to f*** with the Survivors, like telling them he's gonna have the Others trap their people, and then asking for some milk. Or trying to pull Locke to his side by saying he was captured while trying to recruit Locke to the side of the Others. But this led to Ben being broken out by Michael (and Ben totally destroying Michael's fragile emotions by telling him "You didn't have to kill Ana Lucia or Libby to free me." And then it turned out that Ben was actually the LEADER of the Others the entire time, and they had let him escape.

The rest of the series basically turns Ben from this badass manipulator into a lesser manipulator with a fragile ego that wants desperately to lead and feel welcomed, and we're treated to scenes of him being treated like s*** by his dad, or wrestling power away from Charles. And yet throughout this, he still loves Alex, a girl he kidnapped, as his own daughter, and he basically snaps and goes out of his way to kill as many people as possible when she's killed by Kemy during the fourth season. Then when it turns out that Locke is becoming more popular and more of a leader than Ben, Ben tries to kill him once, fails, and then is forced to become John's b**** for the rest of his time on the island, after which he kills John again and succeeds this time, only to have Locke supposedly come back to life on the island and boss him around. This in turn leads to more emotional issues for Ben as he has no idea how to deal with his fragile world when he's not in complete control of everything, and this leads to him breaking down and finally becoming an outright good guy after having waffled between evil Locke and the heroes all season. Even at the end of the series though, and after having joined Hurley as his second-in-command, Ben still hasn't gotten past his issues and doesn't deem himself worthy of joining the others in celebration. To me, this is the mark of a good character. Ben is extremely flawed, and we see those flaws up close for his entire time on the show, yet they actually make you care about him, rather than despising him.

8. Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Firefly)

Yeah, Wash and Jayne probably could've made this list too, but honestly, I feel like those guys and Kaylee really work best in minor roles, and unfortunately, minor roles don't really adapt well sometimes to becoming amazing and memorable characters. With Mal, he's one of the few cases in which the main character of a show or movie or whatever is actually the coolest and most awesome character in the show. And I think what makes Mal work as the main character is that he never really hogs the screentime in any given episode. Yes, there are episodes in which he's the focus, but he lets the supporting cast pop up and ease some of the tension every so often, and it makes for a great dynamic in the cast. Mal himself is an amazing character because he's witty, he's hot, he has strong leadership skills, and his relationship with the other cast members is interestingly fleshed out on a character-by-character basis. Plus, you've gotta love a guy who has extremely bad luck by his own admission, yet can think quick on his feet and can MacGyver his way out of almost any negative situation he finds himself in (even if this does require the saving of his ass from various members of his crew on a regular basis). It's kinda hard to go into detail why I love a character from a show that didn't last a full season (God DAMN you FOX), but I just do.

7. GlaDOS (Portal series)

Prior to Portal 2, I liked GlaDOS, but she probably wouldn't have made it on this list. Don't get me wrong, she was funny as hell, and I love the idea of a computer program that isn't aware that she's evil, but at the same time, isn't going out of her way to be a paragon of virtue to save humanity (Like HAL from 2001). Basically, she just did everything in her power to f*** with any and all test subjects because f*** those guys. And hearing her over the intercom all through the game and listening to her become more bitter and crazy and spiteful really makes that final battle all the more climactic, where you enter her chamber and just see this massive robot hanging over you and looking down upon you before she starts trying to pump poison gas into the room in order to kill you. But that's just Portal 1, which as I've said was not enough to get her on this list at all, let alone into the top ten.

Portal 2 basically took the pre-established character of GlaDOS, brought her back to life, but also added several new character developments. First off, now she's not only evil and crazy, but now she's evil and crazy AND wants revenge on Chell for "murdering" her. So she goes out of her way to f*** with Chell on a regular basis once more, taking further jabs at her being adopted, or being fat, or being stupid and brain damaged or whatever. And this culminates with the final battle in which you replace GlaDOS with Wheatley. Unfortunately, this doesn't end well at all, so you're once again trapped in the facility and you wind up finding GlaDOS in the belly of the facility, having been turned into a potato somehow. And it's kinda adorable, actually, because she becomes nicer, but she's still giving backhanded compliments on a regular basis (also, she's afraid of birds, very very afraid of birds). But as you trek through the facility, you learn that GlaDOS is really the robotic mind of a former employee named Caroline, and GlaFOS starts to realize this as well as actually becomes friendlier and more caring about Chell, to the point where at the climax of the game, GlaDOS saves Chell's life and finally lets her go free (after deciding it's easier just to free her than to keep trying to kill her). Seeing GlaDOS actually transform into a real character with more than one level of development made her awesome, that's all I have to say about that.
