what's the reason behind preferring an analog stick in the upper left of a controller? is that where your thumb naturally goes? after over a decade of DualShock use, I've been conditioned to place my thumbs where the sticks are.




Yep, 360 is set up so the left stick and buttons are where your thumbs default to.

yeah that's true. I figure because of that I might place a lot more importance on the d-pad then most people. needing a quality d-pad is why I love the Dualshock and CCP so much. If the CCP cords were longer I'd be using those on my computer, they are awesome.

I was specifically addressing you. My thumb, as I stated, would hover over the awful D-Pad.

The outsides of the controller are the "default" comfortable thumb positions, most modern games focus on stick over d-pad, so outside for the stick is more comfortable


also with FPSs especially, insides are kinda awkward. There you've got both thumbs on the sticks, and if both are inside, they're really close together and it's kinda weird

I've actually wondered about switching face buttons with the right stick and how that would be. It might actually be cool for FPSs, but we've got nothing to actually test it out yet - guess we'll find out with the Wii U though

Why do you find it weird or awkward? If anything, I'd rather place my hands in the same position on either side of the controller when playing a shooter. That, to me, is more natural. Not that it matters -- my left thumb in a slightly different position is neither going to detract from my enjoyment or enhance my performance.

I don't much anymore, but for someone who used to play an FPS 5 hours a day every day for like a year, the difference between them is VERY noticeable. The dualshock just feels gross for shooters.

You're right that thumbs being in the same position is good, but insides is not - the outsides is the more comfortable part of the controller, and if both of your thumbs are on the inside, they feel too close together

that's why I'm curious about a face/right-stick swap

I don't play many shooters. I've played Uncharted plenty, though, and I can't say I ever had an issue with the analog stick placement. It works as it should, and it doesn't hinder my ability to aim. I can see you being uncomfortable with it if you're used to the 360 controller, but if you've used the Dual Shock for a while, which I'm guessing you have, it shouldn't be too big of a problem! Maybe some minor readjustment to get reacquainted with it. I dunno, I can flip between both of the controllers and use them well enough.

But with the DualShock's design, your thumbs are being directed towards the analog sticks. On a 360 gamepad, with a flatter side, there's much less resistance and it may feel more natural to lay your left thumb on the upper left side, but on a DualShock, your thumb would be going against the grain.

Maybe it's just my need to always be using the best I can. When I'm using a PS3 controller, I'm not thinking "I'm fine with this", I'm thinking "I wish this were a 360 controller".

Kind of like how I put off watching Dark Knight on bluray for 2 weeks while on vacation because the TV there only did 1080i.

Good is not good enough.

it's not some major issue, like it doesn't render the Dualshock unplayable

but if there were a choice between two controllers that are the exact same, one had left stick on the outside, and one had left stick on the inside, I'd definitely take the outside and never look back.
