Yeah, that's definitely not how their positioning it. They mentioned the ability to play by yourself only briefly, and just to basically confirm that it doesn't require that you have other human party members with you to finish the game. The real meat of the experience will be playing online -- everything is being tuned to playing online. They may work in an offline mode later on, but as is, this is definitely an online RPG (it's even be labeled as such, and the title is actually "Dragon Quest X Online") before it's a single-player experience with online extras.
Is it just me or does this seem like a brilliant move by Squeenix?
A) Take the most popular game series in Japan B) Make it subscription based online only (if that's how it's going to be, not enough info yet)
It's basically like if Call of Duty became pay-to-play online. Sure, there'd be some stragglers but the series is so damn popular at this point I guarantee you people would sign up for monthly subscriptions.

Eh, not really. Call of Duty is already a multiplayer experience, that's the only reason people play those games. Dragon Quest, for the better part of 25 years, has always been a single-player game. The last time SE had the idea to take their single-player series and make it pay-to-play online was Final Fantasy, and that didn't exactly fare very well compared to previous games.
stockholders are the worst argument to use when a company has news because the only things you see are people reacting without having any time to think. especially true if it's something new.
those who DO think meanwhile tend to analyze the value it may have and do their checks. seriously, stocks go up and down a lot, and while it had a pretty entertaining drop, it's probably just a dent.

That's super. DQX is still going to sell like gangbusters in Japan. The only reason it dropped was because its coming off the heels of FFXIV. FF doesn't hold the sway DQ does in Japan.

that's a bit wrong there dude - FF11 by all means was a pretty successful game for them. it was a strange twist to do it, but it worked out well for them. ...now FF14 nobody understands what happened to it.
but this can help redeem them! think of it like the DMC series: after the middle sucking it up, the 3rd was great!

no, the reasons it dropped are more to do with the fact that this isn't what anyone thinks of when they hear the words dragon quest. it's not a turnbased rpg, it's not a classic rpg, they're changing not just the system but possibly the entire game's structure. so people get concerned. when they get concerned, they sell irrationally. ff14 being a turd only helps quicken that process up.

Oh, I'm not talking about financial success. You don't have to sell millions in order to be successful with a MMO. As long as it maintains a nice level of activity, you can constantly generate revenue from everything that you can charge for. I'm talking more about how much FFXI sold relative to other games, and more specifically how FFXI sold in Japan. FFX sold over 2.5 million copies, FFXI barely did 500k on the PS2 -- and that's after multiple expansions.

At one point, FFXI had over 2 million active subscribers.
That's pretty good, isn't it?

Well, yes, but that's worldwide. We were talking about Japan, where the subscription fees will likely stay, and the market where Dragon Quest matters the most. By the time XI released, Final Fantasy was a huge international brand that had sold million and millions of copies. By comparison, the best selling DQ game in the West is DQIX at one million (and that's with the US and EU combined). Different situation.
i now want a photoshopped picture of TWEWY where, instead of Neku, you've got the guy in charge of the dmc reboot smiling at you while giving you the finger.

I'm actually coming to terms with this - I don't really mind the loss of the same archaic battle system they've used for 25 years, but the idea of uncontrollable AI characters or forced multiplayer really unsettles me. I think there's a space for DQ as a single player game that's more action-y, but to go all the way to full-blown MMO is a little drastic.
and yeah, I know this isn't full-blown in the same way that a FF11 or WOW is. it's just more than I would like. I would put money on it that the sense of adventure and extremely detailed world will translate extremely well to this kind of game -- maybe even better than any previous game in the series. I just don't really want it to go there.
everyone seems to make a big deal about AI controlled party members...but I've been using that in DQ since DQ4 when it was available! It can be a chore to select all the attacks for everyone.
They're only making this game because FFXIV bombed without chance of saving it, and they need to make back all the money with subscription fees. I don't have any faith whatsoever in this, and if it makes it to America, it will sell like ass.

After seeing the game in action and the beautiful world... I'm tempted but lmao AI NAKAMA. Haven't they learned AI NAKAMA are ****? That's the reason FF13 was ass. At least let me customize the AI like FF12.
The one thing I'm not understanding is why people are complaining about AI-controlled party members. It's pretty much necessary for an action battle system, how the heck would you control everyone at once otherwise? If this were still turn-based, you'd have a valid complaint though.

A hare like me couldn't catch up to Black Turtle.
F*** me. Another SE MMO :\ Still haven't learned their lesson.
Regardless if they could even make a good MMO, I'm never going to play an MMO again. It's like plastic instruments. One and done. I just don't give a flying f*** about MMO's anymore, and never will ever again.
So sale -1. Horrible decision, like they've been doing for f***ing YEARS now.
What the F*** is up with Square? All they can do is s*** now, aside maybe from DQ 9. Complete f***ing opposite of 90's Square, where it was rare they made a bad game.
Complete f***ing opposite. Company can burn in flames for all I care and I wouldn't shed a tear.
Actually for me, they've been going downhill since the movie came out. X didn't do it for me. F*** the movie. Ruined Square.
