The Uncharted topic has got me thinking - graphics have gotten incredible, but you can still clearly tell between a PS3 and a photograph taken by a beautiful woman. When do you think in-game graphics will become photorealistic? I remember thinking when I saw the intro video for Gran Turismo 3 that graphics had gotten insane because there was a point where I couldn't tell if it was CG or if it was actual footage - that was a decade ago.

I honestly don't think the next generation will be able to do it - and I think there's only a chance that the next gen (PS5) will accomplish it.

Those graphics are not photorealistic.

But I remember FFX was the first game I played where I had a hard time distinguishing between in-game cutscene models and FMV models.

Like JC says, they really shouldn't.
Photo-realism is boring, games should have a sense of style that goes beyond the real. To clarify, even something that's based mostly on real life with a touch of style (like Uncharted) is fine, but game's shouldn't be obsessed with mimicking real life.

i don't think they ever will

that said, i remember seeing an ad for gran turismo 4 in a magazine (i think it was 4) of a car driving next to a canyon and thinking it was an ad for an actual car until i saw the GT logo. i thought that was real.

the most realistic fantasy CGI in gaming is probably blizzard's intros to WotLK and Cataclysm.

Pretty much. Have any of you guys seen the new Planet of the Apes? The Orangutan and Gorilla are probably the best CGI creatures I've ever seen. Even with the chimps you could rarely tell they were fake until you tried paying attention to the little things like eye movement and some other animations. I know movies are always ahead of video games in this category, but we're coming pretty close.

The main issue is trying to get people to look photorealistic.

I've never really seen any game get all that close to it.

Movies have already gotten to the photorealistic point because they don't have to worry about running at 30/60 fps consistently.

If you look at stuff like Battlefield 3, it's pretty evident that we're getting close to that 60 fps photorealism. But I believe we can only get really close, we will never be able to be exactly photorealistic. There's just so much detail in real life that you wouldn't be able to replicate in a game, unless you went down to like a molecular level or something.

Sure, most digital cameras only capture like 2560x1280 points of light or whatever, which should be entirely doable in gaming soon enough, but each of those points are generated by real life physics which is way too complex for a game.

It's all about the difference between pre-rendered and generating on-the-fly. If you have as much time as you want, like with movies, you can just manually build models and animations to look like real life, but you don't have that luxury in games as user input makes things unpredictable, so you have to generalize. The only thing I can think of is to simulate all of physics for each frame you draw.
