Why exactly was it so ill received? It was a decent enough movie.

From what I remember, it was mostly the pacing I didn't like. Particularly the lead up to the final battle. It just kind of... happened, and despite the Earth being in certain peril, I didn't feel like there was any sense of urgency. Like it was in the background of the evil scientist and romance plots, and then at the last second, he was like "oh I guess I should go fight that thing and save the earth". I dunno...

If they focused on Hal Jordan and Sinestro the entire time, it would've been an awesome movie.

But alas, they thought love stories and cloud monsters made for better storytelling. Green Lantern with more drama than just tons and tons of CGI action would've been so much better.

And I found it really hard to believe that Hal went from being the dude who ran away from the Corps to fighting off their greatest enemy with little to no training.

This, too. A cosmic horror that takes down the greatest of the Lantern Corps, only to be taken down by one guy who just received his powers and ended up being pretty terrible at them.

I did enjoy it. But it wasn't even 1/5 as good as it should have been considering the source material.

I mean, the movie spent 45 minutes dicking around on earth with build up, and then spent the majority of the remaining movie there, too. And it cost $300 Million. You'd think considering the cost it would have given us this:

But no, the director "didn't like big battles, wanted it to be more personal".

*sigh*

This. They didn't even really touch on the idea of Sinestro being Hal's mentor in the Corps before his turn. And I found it really hard to believe that Hal went from being the dude who ran away from the Corps to fighting off their greatest enemy with little to no training.

Even my favorite part was kind of lame. I loved Sinestro's look in the end credits scene, but there was next to no leadup to it. He had like one disagreement with the Guardians and that was it. There wasn't much of anything to show his lack of satisfaction with the way the Corps was being run.

Of course I knew what was up, but I could hear people as I walked out of the theater talking about how now he was possessed and gonna be evil. They didn't really indicate why he would do such a thing all that well.

It was an odd mix of everything going way to slow while at the same time happening way too fast.

Likewise, the only reason I liked it is because I love GL, but my biggest problems with it come from me being a GL fan.

Yep.

Still like it a lot and I'm getting the BluRay, but at the time I was just happy GL had gotten a movie. It could have been so much more.

Here's hoping the sequel gets a new director.

I'll discuss a little more, because hey why not.

Green Lantern is one of those heroes that you really need to take a deeper look to really love. This guy has unmatched willpower, and that's where he can use his awesome power of the ring. To really understand why this guy is such a great hero, you need to understand just what kind of person he truly is. You need to understand why his willpower is so tremendous.

That's where Sinestro comes in. You have to have Sinestro in Hal's story as a foil. You have this stern badass who is among the most beloved of all of the Lantern Corps for how great he is. And you see Hal training under him is a big deal because of this. You go into it thinking that Sinestro is the best in the Corps. But you get to know Sinestro. You find out that he's just an ass who rules by fear. Sure, he does a pretty good job, but he doesn't give a damn by what cost he's keeping his sector under wraps. While Sinestro's willpower comes from his need to see order by any means necessary, you have the foil in Hal Jordan who doesn't take the easy way out like Sinestro and resort to fear, but rather he believes in himself to be strong enough to protect everybody with his power.

So Hal takes exception to this fact while everybody is talking about how great Sinestro is, but Hal is just trying to do what he can. Eventually, Sinestro keeps pushing it further and further. We have Sinestro's sector being invaded by whatever species that was, and it's big. Sinestro's entire world is about to go down, and he is willing to do whatever to protect it. So while Hal and the other Lanterns are trying to help out Sinestro's people, Sinestro is sacrificing whoever he can in order to stop as many of these invaders as he can.

Then Hal Jordan catches sight of Sinestro willing to kill not only the invaders, but his people as well in the fight. Hal stops Sinstro from doing what he's doing, then dispatches those invaders before confronting Sinestro. They get into a big fight about how they should use their ring. Sinestro looks down on Hal for being a rookie, but Hal gives us a speech about how the ring means we are to protect everyone, and not use it for your own gain. Sinestro takes exception to this and they brawl. THIS is the climax of the movie. They fight until Hal Jordan manages to edge out a win, and Sinestro is arrested and exiled into the darkness of space. It's then that he comes across the Yellow Lantern and sets up for the sequel.

Doing that ensures we get a hero we can get behind, and it lets us really understand what puts Hal Jordan above the rest. He's got more willpower than everybody, and he's legitimately GOOD and cares for people. And that's why he's a hero in a way that is just as impressive, if not moreso, than any other. He isn't afraid to stand up against anyone, not even the most elite.

How they managed to go with f***ing Parallax and that derpy fight, and just basically gave us Ryan Reynolds trying not to be Ryan Reynolds, which sucked.

I know I've been plugging this in a few topics lately, but for anyone interested in GL, DC is relaunching there whole lineup in 2 days, and Green Lantern #1 comes out on the 14th. While there's will plenty of backstory stuff, it's going to be a big jumping on point for new readers as well and should tell you everything you need to know. Not to mention, you may be surprised who's starring!

Producer #1: Hey, let's bring in Ryan Reynolds and have him do not Ryan Reynold-y things!
Producer #2: Why wouldn't we play up to an actor's strengths? Why not just hire someone else? Isn't that incredibly stupid?
Producer #1: Yeeeeeeeeeeeep!
