My friend is moving to New York forever. We played four player Timesplitters 3 when he lived here but that doesn't have online play anymore! So if there is something as good as Timesplitters that's focused on deathmatches and has online play and you guys told me about it I would appreciate you a ton.
I dunno. Like if there's a way that three of us can be playing on one screen in Alaska and he can be in on that game from New York, that'd be a bonus. If not, we could probably make it work without that.
Uncharted would require some PS3 purchases, I don't think any of us have one at the moment. Is that a splitscreen situation where just NY friend and I could buy one or would each of the four of us have to own one?
Quake Live, free sounds encouraging! I assume it's keyboard/mouse only? My friends aren't much into PC gaming but I might be able to sell that to them if it isn't going to cost them.
I don't think any of them would dig a Halo game. I don't know much about Borderlands though! How is that?

It looks like you can add a gamepad, but you probably don't want to. Quake is very fast and in order to do things like rocket jumping you need to be able to change where you're facing rather quickly. I didn't realize you were looking for console games.

I'm sure you're looking for something similar, but sadly, there aren't many games out there quite like TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.
I'll throw a recommendation out there that isn't as well known, but still awesome. Monday Night Combat is on both XBLA and Steam for $15. It's the combination of a team-based/class-based shooter and a tower defense game and it's a blast. I was also gonna say Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (or just wait for Battlefield 3, which looks great) but neither seems to be the kind of game you guys would go for I assume.

Between all of us the only current gen consoles we own are two Wiis, so I left it open ended because it's either got to be PC or everyone has to buy some hardware. We all mostly play consoles though so they might be more comfortable with that. I'm just trying to get a general feel for some possibilities and then suggest the ones that sound viable to them and see what they think.
Borderlands multiplayer is co-op, yes. Up to 4 players.
That's all it is.
I mean, there are some little mini-battles you can do where you face each other, but it's just for ****s and giggles and doesn't really amount to anything.

Sounds like there's several good options here, thanks guys. I'll mention them all and if we go the console route we might end up playing more than one of them. Gotta see how they feel.
On a related note, they really should make a Timesplitters 4!
I just suspect that TF2 might not be ideal with only four people! They'll definitely prefer a four player thing to "we're all playing on the same server but there's a bunch of other people too."
so... online PC shooting games that would support 4 player only games with extra bonus points if they support console-style game pads? also would be swell if they can run on hardware that's a couple years old and the cheaper the better, probably.
I do realize that this is a lot of requirements and it may be tough to find something!
there is a game called firefall that is in beta atm. i saw some footage of it by totalbiscuit at gamescom
it is similar to tf2 in that there are classes, but differs in that the weapons have alt fire modes and also super high jumping that reminded me of tribes. there will also be an open world that i do not know much about as it has not been shown, but it will be more like an mmo rather than just pvp.
really, need some video to see what the game is like...
Some pvp matches
Looks like an official video mostly showing the open world aspect and some of the features like customizeable gear.
The game will be free too, so there isn't much excuse for not at least checking it out once it is open to people unless you just hate mmo or pvp type games

There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out
I can't really think of anything off-hand that fits your description better than TF2 does. The maps may be a bit big, but I would think you guys could get around that with the different modes like CTF. Otherwise, Monday Night Combat wouldn't be a terrible choice, as the maps are generally smaller, but the characters are also slower, and it would be tough finding a balance where two people could defend the ball from the robots and still have time to kill the other team.
Honestly, I do think Borderlands would be right up your alley, even though it's pretty much co-op only. It's definitely the best online experience if you have only four people. Honestly, it's probably my favorite online experience of the past 5 years.

I still think Quake Live is a great option. It's free to try and plays in your browser... have each person go through the basic tutorial and see how you like it. It'll take like 15 minutes.
