It would not be anything before the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox era. Games before that tend to get by these days on nostalgia and legacy.
I think this is absolutely false. I would argue the opposite, actually - there are very few candidates from the PS2 generation and onward. If we're talking about the general population suddenly being exposed to all the video games at once, almost certainly simpler games that are easily understood and interacted with are going to be popular. the 16 bit era would do quite well, so would puzzle games in general.
it would have to be a game that teaches you how to play without being totally intrusive
like, I love Okami and all, but the game is blatantly in your face every time you learn something new - "YOU JUST LEARNED THIS TECHNIQUE LOOK THIS IS HOW YOU USE IT"
contrast that with, say, Braid, which teaches you its mechanics with a few buttons in the background

Let's please not start this argument again. Nostalgia doesn't mean those games aren't good anymore based on today's standards.
A game like DKC2 would honestly be an outstanding game to pick based on yoblazer's criteria (NOT Yoshi's Island, you freaks).
And definitely not Earthbound, what the heck.
Mario Galaxy 2 is also a good choice. Honestly, the best "This is what video games are all about" examples to use based on what yoblazer said would probably be platformers all around.
Chrono Trigger is the only viable RPG IMO. Straightforward and simple like we've all discussed before. Most of the rest of the genre is pretty convoluted in story, gameplay, or user interface.
You have to understand this society. They never had games and suddenly games. They would not be able to compare them to anything except their movies and shows and out of familiarity and comfort they would consider the most movielike game to be the best ever.
Clearly it is the metal gear solid series.

Hence my suggestion of Uncharted 2!

Probably the best case I can think of with the right balance of graphical quality (even by today's standards), quality gameplay and actual enjoyment, all of which are imperative for a quality game. Yes, it is sorely lacking in plot and depth, but in this theoretical world, if you had to pick between legitimate enjoyment for a game or a decent story (which realistically is only there in most cases to compromise for an otherwise dull and repetitive game), what do you think you would go for. It even had online capabilities, though I think I only ever used it once.
tldr: still-respectable graphics + quality gameplay + sheer fun + online = best game ever IMO
I dunno what the answer is offhand, but I'll just say it's not Tetris. There are a ton of puzzle games that have better or more addictive gameplay than tetris. The only reason Tetris has the edge in overall mainstream popularity/appeal is because of coverage. Tetris is everywhere. That's not a factor in this scenario, so yeah, don't think Tetris holds up nearly as well.
Though this question is kinda weird cause it's like.. what does "best" mean here. Does it mean the one that sells the most copies? The one that gets the best reception among everyone? The one that gets the best reception among people who are actually into these new games they haven't seen before?
If it's one of the two first questions I'm inclined to say Wii Sports is the right one. If it's the latter, yeah, gotta think.

Sure individual people would find their CTs and Marios but the general consensus wouldn't change. I know kids who completely missed out on the Ps1/N64/Saturn era and still think OoT/FF7 are the best.
