I WOULD do 100, but I'm gonna try to put some good work into these write-ups and such, so 50 is all I've got the will to do.

If there's a character on here that's REALLY REALLY REALLY good but I don't have up here, it's most likely because I haven't seen that thing. So no Dr. House, no Walter White, no Tyler Durden, etc. I need to watch House, Breaking Bad, Fight Club, and a bunch of other stuff, but there's only 24 hours in the day. If you don't like that, join my Operation Timefall to give everyone 100 hours every day so they can do all the stuff they wanna do, because there's a ton of stuff I'd watch, read, play, etc., if I only had the time.

That said, I DID have enough time on my hands to enjoy a ton of fictional media and with literally millions of characters floating through my memory, I managed to rank my top 50.

Rankings will start soon, either in the next hour or possibly tomorrow morning since I have work tonight. Anyway, feel free to speculate and such.

I don't watch network TV much except for reality shows (competition-type shows, not stuff like Extreme Home Makeover)) and stuff that REALLY intrigues me. Sleeper hits like House and Heroes I just never got into, of course now with readily available season DVD sets I know there's really no excuse. :p Someday I will, this list is ever-changing.

#50: Nikki Wong
external image
"It's almost like between the two of you, there's only one brain!"

Featured in: 6teen
Portrayed by: Stacey DePass

*SPOILERS FOR the cartoon show 6teen*

.

The list starts with a character from a show that's taken a lot of flack on the internet for its animation, potty humor, and other such things, but I really loved this show while it was on and was greatly entertained by its ensemble of fun characters. The standout among the cast was Nikki Wong, a 16-year-old girl with a bad attitude and some serious facial jewelry. On the surface, Nikki seems like the average "cartoon tough girl", but she's got a big heart deep within, showing unwavering loyalty to her friends and a deep, deep love for her boyfriend Jonesy no matter how much he pissed her off (practically once an episode... at least). Of course, there's nothing wrong with Nikki's tough exterior. She was one of the wittiest animated characters in recent memory, always ready with a sharp, hilarious insult delivered in perfect deadpan by voice actress Stacey DePass. It was when Nikki was taken out of her comfort zone, however, that she got REALLY hilarious and that snarky voice of hers became a full-on frantic gasp, speeding up several notches as Nikki struggled to figure out what to do next. She, like the other girls in the series, had quite a few fanservice moments, getting stripped down to her undies in a memorable (and hilarious) scene, and getting dressed up like a typical girly girl when she was briefly brainwashed by Khaki Barn management. Fanservice and humor aside, it was Nikki's heart that endeared me to her, and while it was tough for people to get close to her in the show, she was always kind to those she truly cared about, though she didn't hesitate to let them know when they were screwing up. Her moment of prime vulnerability (and heartwarming emotion) came in the season 2 finale special "Snow Job", where she was struggling to let Jonesy know what she thought of him as he tried to hook back up with her. After a series of angry outbursts, the episode climaxed with a touching scene at the end where we all got to see just how deeply Nikki cared about Jonesy, struggling to keep up her tough front even as her voice audibly broke (again, nice acting from the voice actress here). Nikki's final series of touching moments came in the series finale, when she and her family actually moved away from her friends (they really did it, and that was the end of the show). After trying desperately to stay with them by moving in with her friend Jen, Nikki was given the chance to stay after all when her parents decided not to move. However, Nikki took the unselfish road and decided that she needed to sacrifice for her parents (of course, she did vow to keep up a long-distance relationship with her friends and Jonesy over the computer). Despite being a lazy, snarky underachiever, Nikki showed she had perhaps the biggest heart in the series, showing love and sacrifice and loyalty. That, and being one of the best-looking characters in Flash animation.

#49: Robert Langdon
external image
"What really matters is what you believe."

Featured in: Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol
Portrayed by: Tom Hanks

*SPOILERS for Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and The Lost Symbol*

.

The main character of three of Dan Brown's novels and the most famous symbologist this side of Star Ocean, Robert Langdon is Dan Brown's author avatar in the three books in which he appears. A Gary Stu to be sure, but one with interesting layers and hidden depths that I felt made him the perfect protagonist for a trio of compelling novels. He's an awkward Indiana Jones, a socially-stunted James Bond, who can solve coded, cryptic puzzles with his mind but is clearly shown not to have all the answers, sometimes even when it counts. As is par for the course in these types of stories and with these types of characters, attractive women seem to be drawn to him, and it's fun to watch some of the awkward moments play out as the professor is thrust into situation after situation almost totally beyond his control. He rarely solves his problems with physical force, though he is prone to knocking people about the head in a pinch (it's quite funny when he has to resort to such tactics). Some may be surprised that I quite enjoy this Gary Stu (hell, some may be surprised that I enjoy these books which I admit are the equivalent of literary junk food), but he's got more awkward moments than most, he's in abject terror for 90% of the novels, and usually it's not even him who saves the day, such as when he and Katharine Solomon are kidnapped and trapped in The Lost Symbol and it's the FBI (or CIA, I forgot) who have to come to their rescue. Langdon's most heartwarming moments come not when he's romancing women (again, most of THOSE moments are awkward and are instigated by the female in those situations), but when he's experiencing moments of soul-searching clarity. Robert Langdon isn't a religious man, but he isn't QUITE an atheist either (I'd compare his viewpoints politically to someone like Trey Parker), and it's really compelling to see him open up at certain points in the novels and admit that there are things that he can never know about no matter how much research he does. In the Da Vinci Code movie, the last fifteen minutes of which are fantastic in my opinion, he admits to Sophie that when he was trapped in a well as a young boy, that he indeed prayed to Jesus that he would be saved, and that he has no way to know what's human or what's divine, offering up the quote I used for him. Then of course there's that moment at the end of the movie and of the book, where he realizes that Mary Magdalene is buried beneath the Louvre (a scene done beautifully in the movie, set to Hans Zimmer's excellent score) and goes to kneel above her grave. While Robert Langdon may indeed be Dan Brown's mouthpiece/wish fulfillment device, I couldn't help but be endeared to him over the course of three admittedly entertaining novels, and I couldn't think of a better protagonist for those books.

#48: Sophia Maguire
external image
"We don't have the luxury to grieve."

Featured in: The Event
Portrayed by: Laura Innes

*SPOILERS for The Event*

.

The most unlikely of villains, Sophia was unique among villainous characters in ways that made her utterly unpredictable and so much fun to watch. Like many villains, she started out on the side of good... at least as much as you could tell was the side of good in The Event, one of the most "gray vs. gray" types of shows I've ever watched. She always, ALWAYS wanted what was best for her people, a race of alien creatures that had come to Earth during World War II only to be captured and imprisoned at a secret government base. Time and time again, Sophia's goals clashed with those of the government, only for the two to converge once more once Sophia's son Thomas went rogue. There was even a time when Thomas was thinking of killing Sophia, but he couldn't bring himself to do so, and one wonders what kind of mother Sophia must've been. What finally pushed Sophia over the edge, a tragic misunderstanding in which two-thirds of the group of former prisoners were killed by the US government, including Sophia's son Thomas in a horrific and tragic scene, set her full wrath upon the planet, and Sophia went from a caring, kind figure to one capable of nightmarish deeds, including the killing of billions of humans. In this final part of the season was when I REALLY came to like Sophia as a villain, because it juxtaposed her calm, motherly side with her dangerous, hate-filled villainess side. What made her unique among villains was the dear love she showed to her people, even when they repeatedly screwed up. Guard is stupidly tricked and gets tied up by the heroes as they make their escape? No problem, all is forgiven, do better next time! She turned the old "you have failed me" trope completely on its head. She was even willing to forgive those who betrayed her, though after numerous betrayals her capacity to forgive eventually ran out. Even at the end of the series, she had to be begged not to kill the hundreds of people she'd managed to trap inside an airport with the virus, and we could clearly see the pain in her expression as she spared human lives, her hatred toward the human race still very much visible. Masterfully played by Laura Innes (who deserved an Emmy for the performance), Sophia is one of the best TV and sci-fi villains in years and one of the biggest reasons I regret the show's cancellation.

#47: Bayonetta
external image
"Don't f*** with a witch!"

Featured in: Bayonetta
Portrayed by: Hellena Taylor

*SPOILERS for Bayonetta*

.

I was endeared with Bayonetta from the moment I first saw her. Spectacularly hot, wears glasses, packs a ton of ass-kicking moves... actually, girls like that are a dime a dozen in the video game world, but Bayonetta has a ton of unique qualities that make her stand out from the rest. She's INCREDIBLY over-the-top, embracing her sexuality and flaunting it in ways that have rarely been seen in a video game before. She knows she's beautiful and she has a huge amount of pride in her abilities and appearance. Her spells are kickass and awesome, she's deliciously sadomasochistic and delightfully funny. Of course, it's her hidden depths that are even more endearing, and that comes in when young Cereza is introduced. Seeing the sexy, devil-may-care Bayonetta forced to protect this girl is incredibly sweet, and though she's understandably bitter at first, she swiftly endears to the girl and plays the role of the sweet motherly figure quite well. She's a study of contrasts, she can be twisted and vicious toward her enemies but is generally sweet, in her own strange little way. Her flirtations toward Luka are very cute and though it's never clear whether or not she's attracted to him (hell, maybe she's attracted to EVERYONE), it is clear that she has feelings for him on at least the level of friends. It's weird to see such a devilish and sexy character acting as sweetly as Bayonetta does, she's a lot more fun than Dante and her personality was a big part of what made her game so fun to play, it was practically dripping with personality, completely in tune with Bayonetta's personality and mood, the game and the character nearly became one at times. As mentioned earlier, sexy video game babes are incredibly common, but Bayonetta's complex and ultimately uber-fun personality makes her one of my all-time faves.

#46: Rikku
external image
"Sometimes, when I got a lot on my mind, it just helps to go 'AAAAAAAAAAH!'"

Featured in: Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2
Portrayed by: Tara Strong

*SPOILERS for Final Fantasy X and X-2*

.

One of the cutest characters in any Final Fantasy game, Rikku is your typical RPG genki girl, but like so many others on this list, she's got quite a bit of hidden depth to her. On the surface, she's fun, adorable, and perky, with a few immature tendencies and a bit of a jumpy nature (especially around lightning). I love almost everything about Rikku, she's super sweet, super nice, and of course super cute. Tara Strong did an outstanding job on her voice, bringing Rikku's cuteness into focus with every squeak and shriek. Of course, she also brought a great performance to Rikku's more serious moments (such as when she's explaining why the Al Bhed have been kidnapping summoners, or why she's scared of lightning). It's made immediately clear that Rikku cares deeply for her friends and family and that she'd do anything to protect them, befriending Tidus like a sister and working together with him to protect Yuna from the inevitability of her death at the end of her journey. It's awesome how Rikku joins the party right after you fight her as a boss, that wetsuit unzipping scene is one of the sexiest cutscenes in video game history (in my opinion). In Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku retains her perkiness, but with a tough edge, punching out a security guard at the start of the game and being very adept in physical dressspheres, Rikku is a girl in the Yuffie type of archetype, though a bit less troublesome than the mischievous ninja. As sexy as the dreadlocked FFX-2 version of Rikku is, I still liked her squeaky, jumpy, somewhat insecure and tons more cute FFX incarnation, the very first version of Rikku I saw and the one I think most of us know and love. We saw her develop quite a bit over the course of the game, and build friendships that carried her and her group through thick and thin. I fell in love with her from pretty much the moment I first saw her in the game, and I've been a huge fan of Rikku ever since.

"Please, Sherry, I've heard it all before. And I don't care what this may do to my candidacy. And it's not because I don't want to be President. I do. I just don't think you're fit to be the first lady. "

Featured in: 24
Portrayed by: Dennis Haysbert

*SPOILERS for 24*

.

One of the greatest fictional presidents ever conceived, David Palmer started out as a big cluster of presidential cliches. The first black president, the guy that's been targeted by terrorists, plot device, etc. But as the first season and subsequent seasons showed, he ended up being so much more. We saw our first glimpse of just how unconventional David Palmer was when he was set upon by a group of thugs after journeying to a deserted parking garage. After rather easily fending off their attacks, Palmer gave the two youths a stern lecture about what it really means to be a responsible citizen. THAT'S the first of many incredible moments David Palmer has had over the course of the series. He was a man of great integrity, far more than most real life presidents, he willingly admit when he made mistakes and was honest in his personal dealings even when it stood a chance of harming his career. He wasn't afraid to get firm with people (such as when he told off his wife Sherry after her repeated moments of selfish greed throughout the first day) and he became a staunch ally of Jack Bauer, helping him stop terrorists and protect his loved ones whenever possible. A shining example of the Reasonable Authority Figure trope (one of my favorite types of characters), Palmer was almost always willing to give Jack Bauer the benefit of the doubt, refusing to throw up the same kinds of barriers that other presidents did later on, it's clear the writers had to get Palmer out of the way to make the show more interesting (otherwise the show would end up being "12" instead of "24"). Palmer's courage, moral integrity, and uniqueness among fictional politicians made him one of the most admirable characters in television history and made his death one of the saddest moments in the series. Bonding with Jack Bauer and becoming one of his few trusted friends made him all the more awesome. David Palmer, I salute you and give you a spot on my top 50 fictional characters list.

#44: Celes Chere
external image
"I'm a general, not some opera floozy!"

Featured in: Final Fantasy VI
Portrayed by: N/A

*SPOILERS for Final Fantasy VI*

.

One of the most complex characters in the entire Final Fantasy series, Celes is perhaps the true hero of Final Fantasy VI, though of course that's entirely up for debate. She ended up being my favorite of all the heroes in the game, her character arc was incredibly well-written and though she started out as an evil general in the Empire, she ended up being one of the game's most caring characters, with incredible strength of will (and excellent singing abilities to boot!). Her introduction was quite interesting as she was found and rescued by Locke after being tortured by Imperial guards, from then on she and the rest of the party treated her with varying degrees of trust and her relationship with Locke was probably my favorite romance in the entire series. Here's this thief looking for someone to protect and meeting Celes by rescuing her, and then of course as it turns out she's not someone who usually needs protecting, putting Locke in an awkward position to be sure. Celes got REALLY awesome toward the halfway mark of the game, when Kefka offered her a chance to join him and she stabbed him right in the gut, proving once and for all her loyalty to the party. Then of course there's the second half of the game and that heartrending scene where Celes attempts suicide, perhaps the darkest video game moment I'd ever seen up to that point in my gaming life. Celes was also a very useful party member, kicking ass with both magic and a sword, and it heps that she's quite pretty to boot. Definitely one of the characters I make an effort to keep in my party at pretty much all times, Celes is still one of my all time favorite RPG girls, my admiration for her has only grown with each subsequent playthrough of the game. Though Terra is a beautiful character and has a great story arc in her own right, the shining star of the game is definitely Celes, one of my all-time favorite Final Fantasy characters.

#43: Cowboy Andy Oniyate
external image
"Now, why don't we drink to me, and my reflection in your lovely eyes."

Featured in: Cowboy Bebop
Portrayed by: Daran Norris

*SPOILERS for Cowboy Bebop and Knockin On Heaven's Door*

.

Ah, Cowboy Andy. So out of place in a show like Cowboy Bebop, and yet fits in delightfully among its cast of weirdos and space miscreants, Andy was the absolutely perfect foil to Spike and it's a shame he didn't appear in more episodes, I would've LOVED to see more of him in the Cowboy Bebop movie. However, in the episode he did appear in, Andy stole the show. He was the show's equivalent of Batman, a rich prettyboy who ends up fighting crime... of course, while Batman was totally serious and fought crime for personally painful reasons, Andy pretty much did it for fun. His character was pure fun, I found his romancing of Faye to be rather sweet (hell, I ship Andy/Faye for the lulz) and his rooftop duel with Spike was one of my favorite moments in the series. Though not the most competant fighter by any means, Andy's dumb luck is the stuff of hilarious legends, and it would've been great to see him puttering around catching bounty hunters in hilarious ways (maybe while rescuing Faye from all kinds of convoluted distress). If there was a Cowboy Bebop character who deserved a spinoff, Andy was it. And who better to voice him than Daran Norris (who also, amazingly, voiced the terrifying Vincent in the movie)? Norris' performance stands head and shoulders over the original Japanese actor, whose bombast in performing the role was over the top, and not in a good way. Norris strikes the perfect balance of hilarity and emotion and made Andy one of my favorites on the show right from the very start. I even wrote a comedy fanfic sequel to Bebop, starring Andy of course... in retrospect the fic was hilariously bad and overloaded with pop culture references, but I stand by my characterization of Andy, who was just so damned funny that you could stick him in any situation and he'd make it hilarious. Imagine him busting in on Vincent after he'd taken Faye hostage in his apartment and spouting off some overly hilarious one liner while somehow surviving both the virus and Vincent's vicious attacks. You just know he would. So that's Cowboy Andy, the man, the myth, the legend, and my number 43.

#42: Daphne Blake
external image
"Velma, here's the only thing you ever need to know about boys. They are stupid. If you give a boy two choices, a smart one and a stupid one, he will always make the stupid one every time. That's why you never give them a choice."

Featured in: Scooby-Doo (countless incarnations)
Portrayed by: Stephianna Christopherson, Heather North, Mary Kay Bergman, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Grey Delisle

*SPOILERS for various Scooby-Doo shows, movies, etc.*

.

Few characters have evolved and improved so much over several decades worth of incarnations as Daphne, who started out as a mere damsel in distress and is now (though still prone to being a damsel every now and then) a strong, complex, intelligent character and perhaps the best thing about the best Scooby Doo series in its entire existence. Daphne's evolution paralleled my evolution as a fan, back when I was a kid I loved seeing her get captured and put in distress (loved Penny Gadget for the same reason), I would always fantasize about rescuing her and getting a big kiss (again, I was a little kid back then). But as I grew and got more mature, so did Daphne. I saw her in the new Scooby Doo movies, now played by Mary Kay Bergman and while she was still a bit of a ditz, she was much more competent and far less of a damsel. I also saw the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo when they replayed it on Cartoon Network, and there was Daphne taking on a leadership role and providing the same sort of smarts and intuition that the now absent Freddy and Velma did in the original series. She was interesting in the live-action films too, though Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't as cute as cartoon Daphne and they played up the "tough" aspect of the new interpretation a bit too much for my tastes. My favorite incarnation of Daphne was Grey Delisle's incredible interpretation of her, starting in 2000 after Mary Kay Bergman's death and spanning about ten movies and two series, "What's New Scooby Doo?" and "Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated". Grey's performance fused all the great old aspects of Daphne, her occasional damsel-in-distress aspects and her ditziness, while fusing them with the new badass competent Daphne to provide one of the best characters on TV today. The "Scooby Doo and the Samurai Sword" film exhibited this perfectly, showing a badass scene where Daphne trained in martial arts and engaged in a fierce battle with a cute Japanese girl, only losing after her hair got pulled down over her face. Daphne was strong and competant but not overly so, still retaining some of her cute and girly aspects and providing a VERY well-rounded character in the process. There was also "Aloha, Scooby Doo!" where Daphne proved to be an expert surfer while still hauling around her makeup kit everywhere. And of course, there was Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. Sure, it was a BIT annoying seeing Daphne fawning over Freddy so much, but it was offset by the fact that she was as smart and competent as ever. Plus, there was that AMAZING "Trap of Love" scene... who knew Daphne could sing goth rock? Daphne's one of those characters that I find myself liking more and more with every passing year, the various writers have done an incredible job evolving her character while keeping her core persona consistent (and tossing us damsel in distress fans a bone once in a while), and that's why even after all these years, I'm still in love with Daphne Blake.

#41: Giselle
external image
"But dreams do come true. And maybe something wonderful will happen."

Featured in: Enchanted
Portrayed by: Amy Adams

*SPOILERS for Enchanted*

.

I'd been hyped for Enchanted ever since it was first announced, this was during a time when I was STARVING for any sort of 2-D animation from Disney, and in addition, the trailer looked super funny, so it had that going for it too. When I finally saw the movie, though, I was absolutely blown away and it became one of my top 20 favorite movies ever. The big reason? Giselle, who absolutely stole the show. She's an innocent singing Disney Princess who ends up falling through a portal and ending up in New York City... while still her naive, princessy self. Hilarity ensues, and Amy Adams did an amazing job playing the role with absolute sincerity, not being over the top but remaining sweet and lovely and perfectly enchanting in the role. Here are some examples for you... Giselle visits Robert (her eventual love interest) at his divorce lawyer job and is brought to literal tears at the thought of a couple getting divorced. When her chipmunk friend Pip scurries into a pizza place and panics everyone, Giselle remains perfectly calm and sweet, wondering how anyone could be frightened at the sight of an innocent little chipmunk. Those are just a couple examples, but Giselle and pretty much the whole movie totally exude sweetness in the most incredible ways. Yes, as far as Disney princesses go, Giselle is over the top even for THEM. Would someone like Belle or Jasmine be out of place in modern-day New York? Maybe a bit, but send Belle to the city's public library and she'd be in paradise. Giselle is a Disney Princess in the old style, an expy of Snow White except with beautiful red hair and lovely blue eyes. It's incredibly sweet to see Giselle's moments with Robert's daughter Morgan, it's hilarious to see her break out in song in the middle of Central Park, and it's heartwarming when she warms even the cynical, jaded heart of divorce attorney Robert, especially at the end of the movie when he gives Giselle "true love's kiss". Amy Adams should've won Best Actress for this role, but even though she didn't, I will never get tired of seeing Giselle.

#40: Agent Smith
external image
"Why, Mr. Anderson? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself. Although, only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson, Why? Why do you persist?"

Featured in: The Matrix trilogy
Portrayed by: Hugo Weaving

*SPOILERS for the Matrix trilogy*

.

Even from the beginning, Agent Smith distinguished himself from the otherwise boring Agents in quite interesting ways, from how he was more aggressive than his fellow Agents to how he freely espoused his hatred for humanity, Smith was a bastard right from the very start. It was only after his "death" in The Matrix and rebirth as a rogue agent that he became the series' defining villains and one of my favorite cinematic villains ever. Why did I come to like Smith so much? Even though he was such a dry character, his wit and audacity distinguished him from previous cinematic automatons such as the Terminator. When he DID show emotion, usually anger, it was quite dramatic and very well portrayed by Weaving, who you'd never believe also played a drag queen in a movie in the mid 1990s. A career-defining role, Agent Smith was the perfect foil to Neo, seeking to destroy while Neo sought to protect. His hatred for humanity fixated on Neo by the end of the trilogy, he referred to him as Neo only once at the very end, showing his disrespect for his enemy by referring to him by his Matrix name, "Mr. Anderson", in one of the series' most notable catchphrases. Another thing I liked about Smith was that he was one of those villains who always made you go "oh s***" when he showed up, his menacing presence giving a dramatic and disturbing mood to the scenes he appeared in. Like any good dastardly villain, even children weren't spared his wrath, as seen when he cornered Sati in the Oracle's apartment building. By the end of the series, Smith's power exceeded that of Neo, he was flying and throwing monumental punches and was practically invincible until Neo figured out the one way to kill him. Before that, Smith was an utter badass, a force of nature and the most dangerous thing in the Matrix. He was no one to mess with, another hallmark of the great villains, and his unique personality made him an instant favorite of mine.

#39: The Bride
external image
"When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you're doing his will."

Featured in: Kill Bill
Portrayed by: Uma Thurman

*SPOILERS for Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2*

.

The protagonist of two of my favorite films ever, PERFECTLY played by Uma Thurman, is an incredible mix of lethality and tenderness... but mostly lethality. She's a woman who doesn't take crap from anyone, though of course she had a very good reason for wanting revenge and killing all those people along the way. She never, EVER gave up, even at very dark times in her journey, like when her body was pretty much paralyzed after leaving the hospital, and when Budd had her buried in a coffin. Though she's strong and fierce, she's no stranger to fear, making her courage all the more impressive and her journey all the more incredible. She's a master of ass-kicking, whether it be with a sword, a gun, or with martial arts, I'm sure she has all other types of ass-kicking knowledge as well, which makes her all the more awesome. And of course, there's the motherly element featured in Vol. 2, where she found her long-thought-dead daughter B.B. and became a protector figure for her, it was beautiful to see her embracing and spending time with her daughter and the juxtaposition of that and all the violent things The Bride had been through made the scenes all the more incredible. Again, badass babes are a dime a dozen in fiction, but The Bride's complexity and also, simply, her coolness made her stand out over many of the rest. She made you root for her right from the start, even when she was going up against some of the most sympathetic "villains" ever seen in a Tarantino movie (O-Ren, Gogo, Vernita, hell, even Bill was slightly sympathetic). Her relationship with Bill was a messed-up but strangely touching tragic love story, easily the best romance to appear in a Tarantino film and the driving element behind the events leading up to the films themselves. Both films did an outstanding job of showing two distinct elements of The Bride's personality, the first focused on her outer strength, the second on her inner strength, ultimately forming a four hour character study of one of my favorite characters in cinematic history.

#38: Luna Lovegood
external image
"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure."

Featured in: Harry Potter
Portrayed by: Evanna Lynch

*SPOILERS for the Harry Potter books and films*

.

I love characters like Luna Lovegood, the sweet, slightly loopy, very funny sort of characters that steal your heart and make you laugh at the same time. I saw Luna Lovegood first in the movie, I didn't get around to reading the books until very recently, but even in movie form I could tell that Luna was an awesome character. Very little fazed her, though you could still see how much it hurt her feelings to have people picking on her. Evanna Lynch's portrayal of Luna was amazing and another of the reasons I was so charmed by her. Luna is a very honest but also a very sweet person, not afraid to tell people the truth but still infectiously kind, she is of course strange but it's the adorable kind of strange that makes you just want to leap into the screen or the book and give her a hug. The thought of people picking on her and ESPECIALLY the thought that she may have been tortured by Death Eaters during the Deathly Hallows made my blood boil, you just don't hurt characters like that! I was touched by just how much Luna treasured the friendships she'd made, the fact that she'd decorated her room with pictures of them made me almost weep. Luna's voice in the film was absolutely perfect, a soft sing-song type of voice that I found utterly adorable. I also tend to love characters who, while soft and sweet on the outside, are strong and badass on the inside, and Luna of course had that in spades, using powerful spells to fight off Voldemort's minions and protect her friends when she had to. Luna ended up being by far my favorite character in all the Harry Potter series, the perfect kind of quirky girl for this strange but wonderful universe and a beam of sunshine even in the darkest of times.

#37: Tommy Vercetti
external image
"I just wanted to piss you off before I killed you."

Featured in: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Portrayed by: Ray Liotta

*SPOILERS for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City*

.

Badass, psychopathic, and everything in between, I thought Tommy Vercetti was the perfect protagonist for a Grand Theft Auto game, though I know why people might've preferred the others. But for me, Tommy was the man, a wisecracking badass who didn't take crap from anyone, and if you crossed him, you were gonna pay. Dishing out hilarious one-liners while causing all sorts of carnage, Tommy Vercetti helped make Vice City fun and one of the best games I've ever played, listening to his hilarious justifications for brutally mugging people or throwing down with cops made every murderous rampage special. Vercetti was, of course, at his best in the cutscenes, dishing out some rude words to anyone who dared try to boss him around,he had that killer edge that later GTA protagonists lacked. The journey Tommy went through, from small-time thug to kingpin of Vice City, was incredibly well done and you got to take Tommy through it all. Watching as Tommy rose to power, clashing with foes like Sonny Forelli, Lance Vance, and of course Ricardo Diaz along the way, Tommy did things his way and provided one of the most entertaining rises to power in video game history. Since GTA: Vice City was such a wide-open game, you could essentially make Tommy into whatever you wanted him to be, but he always retained that which made him awesome, whether you were rescuing injured people and putting out fires or running down old ladies with a tank, Tommy Vercetti did things in style and never looked bad in the process. I never understood why he didn't do better in the contests, was it GTA backlash or did people just not like him? Whatever it was, I'd advise the critics to fire up Vice City and open your ears, you'll hear the voice of Vercetti and be instantly amused.

#36: Ira Gaines
external image
"Either you're dead, or you're not. You can't be 'sorta' dead. Here, let me show you."

Featured in: 24
Portrayed by: Michael Massee

*SPOILERS for 24*

.

One of the most badass villains in all of 24, perhaps THE most badass villain, Ira Gaines was the first major villain Jack Bauer had to face, and in my opinion, one of the most dangerous. He had almost total control of the situation, he had Jack Bauer's family held captive and cameras everywhere, tracking Bauer's every move. It was fun to see how cocky he was when he had Jack Bauer right where he wanted him, while at the same time attempting to deal with multitudes of incompetent underlings. Just remember how he dealt with Dan, who had failed to kill Janet York and then lied about it. She can't be "sorta" dead. :) Gaines dispatched a number of subordinates to do his dirty work, he had Kevin Carroll (a decently dangerous baddie in his own right) pose as Alan York to trick Jack's wife Teri, and had contingency plans for his contingency plans, making his scheme one of the series' most complex. You get the idea that had Ira Gaines been running some of the other terrorist organizations in the series, Jack Bauer might not have been so successful. He even had a mole planted in CTU, enabling him to blackmail Jack even there, remember when he almost had Jack shoot Nina? (of course in retrospect that would've turned out a LOT better for Jack, heh...) So yeah, Ira Gaines was pretty damn tough and I would've loved to see Jack Bauer attempt to torture him, I doubt Gaines would've broke. The man was a Navy SEAL and an MIT graduate for Christ's sake! Of course, as is the case with nearly all the show's villains, Gaines had to go down, and he chose an epic way with which to do so. Jack Bauer found Gaines' compound and after an awesome firefight, managed to corner Gaines behind a tree. Gaines, realizing his employers would kill him if he failed his mission, had absolutely no plans to be taken alive. He didn't go down like so many others on the show, he went out shooting, nearly killing Jack before being shot dead. One of the only villains on the show to get the best of Jack Bauer for an extended period of time, Ira Gaines set the tone of the show and it was because of villains like him that I ended up hooked. Too bad subsequent villains couldn't be quite as awesome.
