"I can have fun without alcohol!"

So what. I can have fun without games, books, movies, music, etc etc, but I can have MORE fun with it. I never got this argument :/

No, it really isn't.

If you don't like drinking, there ARE valid arguments against it, and I'm not about to say it's a bad or stupid viewpoint, just that THIS is not one of those arguments.

I can still think while drinking. I don't personally like to get drunk or ****faced, but I'll drink and have fun now and then with friends. I can still think, still interact just fine.

Alcohol has never really impeded my ability to think (though I rarely drink more than a few drinks in a given night). My motor skills are definitely affected though!

I neither said this nor implied it. i merely asserted that the mentally debilitating nature of alcohol is less appealing to some people than others. there is certainly nothing wrong with alcohol in moderation; i personally wouldn't pass up a drink or two.

the argument of being able to have fun without it is basically a nice way of saying 'no thanks'. it isn't so much an argument in and of itself but more a conclusion based on more solid lines of reasoning be it the knowledge of what excessive alcohol can do, other priorities the person might have the next day, or any one of a dozen such things.

That's the problem though; most of the time that they're using this, it's not something that's a NEED, it's just a form of entertainment, and rather than really giving an argument you come off as stuck up.

If they are trying to suggest that the only reason people drink is because they NEED to in order to have a good time, then it's intense insecurity on their part. If they are rationally describing why they don't drink, then it's just a valid discussion bit.

It's a dumb argument because people who drink have fun without alcohol as well. They just have more fun with it. I have no problem with people who chose not to drink or do drugs or whatever. What's stupid is people who are proud of choosing never to try any of those things. I never understood what there is to be proud about not doing something that makes life more enjoyable for billions of people.

I'm not saying that at all

if someone's not interested in alcohol, they don't have to have it, and so there's nothing at all wrong with anyone saying "I can have fun without it"

It's not like they're saying NOBODY SHOULD DRINK ALCOHOL THAT'S AWFUL

you're absolutely right with saying nobody needs gaming, that's also a form of entertainment - and there's plenty of people who DO live without gaming and there's nothing wrong with it

"I don't like it" is valid, as are various health concerns. Hell, even the "I like to be able to think" argument is more or less valid; but saying you don't do something because you can have fun without doing it is just stupid.

I enjoy alcohol not in moderation. I like to get s***faced drunk and party my ass off. A lot of the time I'm unable to think clearly, and it does heavily affect my decision making.

And I love it

But if someone were to say "I can have fun without playing games" it would be regarded as an utterly stupid and pointless comment. The same goes for saying it about alcohol. It's like all those bad sitcoms where you see someone say "I don't need you guys, I can have fun on my own!".

I don't think those guys can express it very well, but I like to give them a bit more credit. I think most rational people understand that alcohol consumption can have its drawbacks. If nothing else, alcoholic drinks are more expensive. Alcohol can have potential health consequences, both long term and immediate. It is often an acquired taste and may repulse people initially (I'm still pretty grossed out by hard liquor). It's just that the people who enjoy it think "yeah, I know about the drawbacks, but it loosens me up and tastes good and makes the night fun, so I don't care."

The other people usually just think "well I'm having fun anyway and I don't want the drawbacks, so I'll steer clear."

Cost benefit analysis is all it is.

Heh, I tried a few things like tons of different beers, wines, strong alcohol and stuff, only thing I ever kinda liked was vodka heavily diluted in orange juice (not like one of my friend who drink them 3/4 vodka 1/4 juice). Still, I liked it because it tasted like orange juice, so I'm just gonna continue drinking orange juice ! Most of my friends don't drink much either, like 1-2 beers during a whole night so there's not much peer pressure from their part. Aaaand nobody drinks in my family, except the occasional wine glass (and even then it's really rare) so I guess alcohol is just not in me !

lol at the "I like to think" argument. I've written stuff while blackout drunk (and don't remember writing) that has blown my mind. Granted it's often difficult to understand due to the way I word things.

you can have fun without cutting yourself, so by your logic not cutting yourself is stupid...i mean, how can you say it isn't fun until you try? i bet the endorphin rush from the pain would be awesome! brain cells...skin cells...it is all the same :p

well the endorphin rush from burning is pretty amazing and brings about a sense of tranquility. I didn't do it for that though. I needed to calm myself down in order to avoid assaulting someone with a dangerous weapon (probably would've killed the guy) and pressing my hand against a really hot object (around 500 degrees farenheit) was the only way that I could think of to relieve that rage, considering that my go-to methods of punching and smashing stuff would've drawn too much attention to me.
