I'm like halfway through Path of Radiance so far, and I can't imagine it getting better.

I think it depends on who you asked. I don't think there was a clear agreement on which was the better game. Maybe PoR was slightly more favored?

Pretty sure PoR is the better-received of the pair. At least from what I've seen.

Spoilers I guess

I prefer Path of Radiance, but it's really down to preference - for myself and many others I think it just comes down to the fact that I like the Greil Mercenaries, and too many times in Radiant Dawn I was frustrated by the unit choices since it flipped between groups and I didn't really care for the others a whole lot.

I think overall more people prefer PoR

I'll take RD though for buffer Ike, mid-battle saves, character transfer and Nintendo just making the game overall more difficult than more recent entries

I haven't played either but I thought RD was a bit less liked since it was divided up between multiple parties which caused the difficulty to be a bit uneven. Or something.

It's very, very close for me, and I flip them around constantly. If you pressed me for answer right now, I'd probably say Path of Radiance. The gameplay of Radiant Dawn is probably better, but I'm not a fan of how supports were pretty much gutted, even if from a gameplay standpoint it opens up a ton more options. If you don't like PoR though, I highly doubt RD is going to be substantially better for you, if at all.

How do those character transfer work anyway? Does it give me the stats of the characters in the original game?

Maybe I phrased it wrong, but I meant "I can't imagine it getting better" since its already great enough as it is.

In PoR, if a character is level 20 promoted and has stats capped, then when you transfer data that character in Radiant Dawn will get +2 to the stat they capped in PoR (+5 if it's HP).

Calill and Largo are exceptions because Largo is not playable in RD. As such, Calill gets his bonuses. So if she caps Magic (and hits level 20) in PoR, and he caps Str and Spd (and hits level 20) in PoR, then Calill in RD will get +2 mag AND +2 str and +2 spd. However, these do not stack - if both Calill and Largo cap skill in PoR (and hit level 20), RD Calill still only gets +2 skl, not +4.

Sothe, meanwhile, has his stats transfer DIRECTLY to RD if he hits level 20 thief. So if he has 17 str and 16 def as a level 20 thief in PoR, then he will have 17 str and 16 def as a level 1 Rogue in RD. Sothe is also unique because he is the only character who's stats can actually decrease due to data transfer - even if his PoR stat is lower than his default RD base, the PoR stat takes precedenc

Aw man, I've never even put him into battle since he started at level 1 and didn't feel like leveling him.

it's no big deal, he's still great in RD

I prefer PoR, overall, but some levels in RD are just amazing. They also make Laguz less lulzy in battle.

If a character reaches Level 20 of their promoted class, and has a stat capped, they gain a bonus to it in FE10. +5 for HP, +2 for Strength, Skill, etc.

You also can get some Weapon EXP bonuses if the weapon rank is C or higher, with a higher rank being a higher bonus, IIRC.

A-Supports become "Bond" Supports in FE10, which basically means they grant you a no-cost +5 Crit and Dodge bonus (When I say no-cost, I mean you have your 5 supports again in FE10, and that bond support isn't counting against you. You could support with the same character again, or different ones and it won't interfere)

A few other things too, I know at least one base conversation can only be gotten if you have a certain A Support in FE9 transferred over, get that same A Support in FE10 again, and some other pretty crazy stuff like that. You can also get a Support Archive from FE9 for any supports you transfer over if you wanted to re-read them.

Maybe I phrased it wrong, but I meant "I can't imagine it getting better" since its already great enough as it is.

Ah, my mistake. Well, yeah, like I said, they're practically tied in my mind. If you really like FE9, I imagine you'd like FE10 as well. Popular opinion trends towards FE9 as far as I know, but FE10 is just as solid, IMO.

Oh, you're fine then. As mentioned, the transfer effects only occur if Sothe reaches Level 20. If you never use him, that won't happen, so he'll have his RD bases.

i wouldn't say i dislike PoR but it is my least favorite FE game out of the ones i've played. i'm actually anticipating RD to be a decent amount better from what i've heard.

Oh, I'm not saying it's impossible or anything, I'm just saying personally I'd be a little surprised if someone had a fairly large swing of opinions between the two. However, that's probably influenced by how I don't think there's too large a gap between the two in terms of quality. They're my two favorite FEs by a relatively large margin, although admittedly I've only played FE7-10. For others, I could be totally wrong.

POR is elite
RD is close but the story is kinda a little disjointed and the gimped supports ruins it.

PoR one of the best games in the series.

Radiant Dawn... not so much. I'd put it maybe 7th or something. From a pure gameplay stand point, RD has some awesome chapters (I'd even say some of them are up there with best in the seres) but it has wildly varying difficulty because of the jumping around. No supports so a lot of the new characters end up being shafted in terms of likability, and some very questionable plot choices that border on stupidity sometimes.

Also every chapter with the Greil Mercenaries is pretty much a faceroll on any difficulty because of how overpowered they are. Gets even more ridiculous in Part 4 when you start getting the characters like Nailah, Tibarn, Caignheis, etc, and I usually force myself to not use them because of how broken they make the gameplay.

It's not a bad game by any means, but it's just kinda sub par by FE standards, probably mostly due to poor planning.

It's worth noting that if you have a Path of Radiance save that was played under Easy mode, you have to delete it before you can use the transfer data feature of Radiant Dawn. This is due to a glitch probably coming from the Japanese version of Path of Radiance not having a Easy mode.
