All of my Aeons' Overdrives take out his first form but then his second form always gets me. I usually nuke the crap out of him with Holy and doublecasted Flares and have Auron Hastega/Zombie Attack/use items but it hasn't worked out for me too well so far. His sword swipe usually beats my whole party.
Bout to start attempt 3 but I'm tired of seeing those Aeon and Power Wave animations and I wanna beat him for good this time.

-Attack Reels, if you have it, utterly crushes the pagodas, since it stops them from gaining HP each time they're killed. If you don't have it, consider slowing them with some sort of hourglass (or Slow spells, but they're less accurate).
-Stoneproof. Use it. You should have some lying around if you've explored much; Yuna gets one way early in the game, Auron gets one on Gagazet, and Demonoliths drop them at a decent clip. I'm assuming you haven't done much of any twinking if you're having trouble, so nothing is likely to be better on your armour than Stoneproof (or even Stoneward), really.
-Haste and Protect on everyone, all the time. You don't need to worry about Shell. These make the sword swipe not especially dangerous, so you only need to worry about the overdrive.
-Speaking of the overdrive, try not to see any in form 2, since Protect doesn't stop them. The Talk command will get rid of two of them; save aeons to block any others.

Did you halfway augment any of the Celestial Weapons so that Aeon Overdrives can break the damage limit? Diamond Dust alone did like 80,000 damage against this boss for me.

Finally I see someone else besides me who has trouble with the final boss. Everyone always tell me that they thought he was super easy but it took me about 10 tries to beat him, if not more.
Yeah nuke him with the overdrives, have Lulu cast Ultima and let Rikku do all the healing.

BFA is the RPG final boss I had the most trouble with last generation... well besides Nocturne (which I still haven't beat >_>) and Unlimited SaGa (which was a serious pain only the first time I played the game with Laura and fought the form that spams Shadow Breath, had no trouble at all on later playthroughs although I haven't fought Mythe's infamous 14 or 15 part final battle <_<)

If you have Holy, Doublecast and Aeon overdrives, this shouldn't really be a hard battle... I'd personally feel a bit cheap if I charged all the overdrives before the fight, and I never get to the end of any of the characters' paths on the Sphere Grid before beating the game.
The 3 times I've played FFX, I've always beat the boss with a tactical approach - keep Protect, Shell and Haste on everyone, kill the pagodas while taking care not to do too much damage since they respawn with extra HP equivalent to the surplus damage you did when you killed them, then use Armor and Power Break on Jecht, poison him and go all out until the pagodas respawn. Usually the battle takes at least an hour, since he'll heal all the time.
Oh, and on the second part, if you ever don't have Protect on your party and/or Power Break on him, the sword attack will be instant game over, as will Ultimate Jecht Shot, obviously.
I get the impression that a lot of people prefer to just overpower their characters and kill everything without needing to think, but to me that's ruining the game.
