Has the least spoilers as you play through, and actually makes the game feel like it is supposed to be done in this order.

So don't choose him as the Flame Champion. You have to have control over the 4 for various parts of the game, but before Chapter 4, you have to choose a Flame Champion out of Chris, Geddoe, and Hugo. That player becomes the "main" character for the remainder of the game.

and yeah I dunno if you c/p'ed that from the one FAQ but I ran across that list after settling on going with the advice and that's currently my plan
