Because they read into things so much that it stops making sense and they like to criticize anyone who doesn't think like them (look at their latest video, the last half of it is nothing but "people who don't agree with us hate change and want the game industry to suck"). And they are obsessed with "originality" to the point that when they decided to respond to viewer questions about what games they actually like, they pretty much said "that's a boring question, instead we'll say what games are really different, even though we admit some might not be good!". I've watched most of their videos and they're not totally awful or anything, but they definitely fit any definition of pretentious you can care to come up with.

Doesn't make much sense, does it? Their entire point in the end of the video is "people who disagree are scared of change". Their examples from other mediums are nothing to do with this, that's their attempt to show that the things they advocate will benefit gaming. You did catch the part where they switch topics partway through to say "I don't think people really disagree with our position, I just think they're afraid of change, and not changing means games will suck", right?

The only real problem with Extra Credits is they make a 10 minute video about something that really doesn't need that much exposition and tbh isn't important in the scheme of themes or is so obvious there's no reason to explain it.

Also, it's not really a jealousy thing. He says everyone in that situation, mostly, wants the answer not just to be that they're different, but better. And how that idea shapes culture, especially when it comes to high brow/simple things.

They've always come across as strong but quite defensive in their views. They'll make a point and back it up with reasoning in extensive detail. Then look at the counter-argument and refute that in great detail. A pretentious person would state their view give some loose reasoning and expect you to accept that.

I like how anybody who thinks intelligently about video games/games as art are pretentious. EscapistMagazine, Braid, Team Ico, Thatgamecompany, etc. All pretentious, artsy-fartsy douchebags we should look down upon because they try to look up.
