TheKoolAidShoto posted... From: baubeta | #098 As someone who has considered internet video game content creator as a potential career path...man, I'm ****ed. Are you a woman?
I think the answer should be obvious. Of course, even if I was, breaking a wrist hurts real bad. Doing that as a career would be no fun.
JaKyL25 posted... How is that what you take away from this?
The headline may be about the ****storm that comes with contributor payments and IP rights when you hook up with an established entity to distribute your content, but I think the sidebar here is totally "If you make content people care about, they WILL support you directly to obscene degrees."
Not really. This one person made a bunch of donation money, but it seems like people just relying on, you know, being paid for contract work on one of the biggest game sites around aren't being paid at all.
I don't want to have to "Hai guyz, I need money!" periodically to make living.
I think it goes beyond emergencies though. Sure, those will bring out the big guns as far as donations go, but I think with some effort, anyone willing to put out quality content (and some cheaply made merch) could support themselves by asking their fanbase for money.
I mean, look at someone like Spoony. He literally maintains an Amazon Wish List with stuff that he just wants, not needs, or needs for the show, but just stuff he personally desires, and his fans BUY IT FOR HIM.

what's the likelihood of you guys amicably leaving the escapist? it seems like they're going to want to drag this out
It's been dragging on for a year, this is just the first time we've been able to talk about it. We've tried to resolve it through talks Finally we had to send them a breach of contract notice, which gave them time to "repair the breach". That didn't happen and so we've left. Unfortunately every time we asked to negotiate we were asked to do other tasks first or simply met with silence on the subject. I don't want it to be a drawn out either though. I hope this is it tonight.
Is it 100% guaranteed that you guys won't be working with the Escapist anymore, or could things turn around?
Contract was terminated Friday. Unfortunately that is pretty final.
Is there any chance of remuneration from Escapist? Can the Extra Credits team continue through this loss? Lots of support here
Luckily it's not the primary source of income for any of us but Allison (who I pay) so the show will survive. I just feel bad for any of the people who rely on money from the Escapist as their sole source of income.
a YEAR!?! That's like the entire time you've been on there. :/
We were paid for our first four episodes without the traffic bonus...
How easily do you guys think you'll be able to find a better outlet?
That's a good question. It's new territory for me. We never anticipated leaving the escapist so we don't have much of a backup plan.
What do you think will happen to the Escapist (and more importantly those that provide their content) in the future?
If I had to take a guess, I'd say they'd have to start treating their content people they'd want to be treated. Otherwise it falls apart.
Video games in general are extremely difficult to consistently make money with. The big companies have a ton of support from other markets that actually helps them get into the profitable margin (where the quality of the work actually yields a comparable price per unit of time/effort expended).
That's just making games. Everything else revolving around games like websites, spinoffs, youtube channels, etc, etc is based almost entirely off of popularity which is basically arbitrary and fluctuates rapidly.
I would say that Madison Rayne reaches more fans than an Internet Critic, but then I see some of those TNA PPV buyrate rumors and it forces me to rethink that thought. <_<

You know all the rumors of TNA knockouts and low-card guys having to take on second jobs to make a living, right?
Yeah yeah yeah, Taylor Wilde worked at Sunglass Hut while she was Knockouts Champion, etc., I was basically confirming that I agree that TNA wrestlers might need fan support despite my gut instinct that wrestlers for a national company should already be compensated enough.

Do you still watch/like the TNA product? At this point it's not so much that it's bad (that peaked with the Jeff Hardy incident) but more that it's just kind of sad. No one really seems to care about anything. It feels like 2000 Nitro.

There's still a few people in the crowd who watch Sting do a backdrop and yell "THIS IS WRESTLING!", but honestly, that just makes it even MORE sad. Who are you trying to kid, TNA audience?

It will launch for $350 with some Wii Sports s***. I bet my life on it. Damn, that KoolAid guy is awesome - NGamer64
This is a giant mess and there's basically no point in analyzing any of it until the vast majority of the facts are known since s*** about this can change so rapidly.
Grey Carter (The guy who does Critical Miss for The Escapist) and his GF are good friends of mine so the next time I speak to either of them I'll ask about this.

Y'see the thing is, Allison didn't get the donations because she was a girl. The injury was pretty much career-ending and without surgery she could never draw again. That's why people donated so much, and when the drive turned out to be much more successful than they needed, it snowballed from there. Oh, and they offered stuff in exchange for donating.
So that's why the donation drive was so much more successful than other similar efforts.
Also I hope this gets sorted out as Extra Credits is pretty much right behind Zero Punctuation, and a really great show. This looks to be bad for both the site and the show. You can't say they didn't bring it on themselves though.

From: LeonhartFour | #011 You gotta wonder what's going through these guys' heads to demand 75% of total charity contributions to help an injured person.
Can we just "lol" at them and move on

Panthera posted... From: Biolizard28 | #060 You know, this is really weird now that I think about it, as Extra Credits was the last series I expected to pull a stunt like this. Based off the show alone, they all seemed like such idealistic boyscouts. Based on the show alone they seem like pretentious jerks who think they need to show everyone else "how to do it right" and dislike anyone who deviates from what they like <_<
Am I the only one who liked the Escapist BEFORE they got Zero Punctuation? They used to have really intelligent articles, often written by industry insiders. (And then funny videos with stick figures started accounting for a large percentage of their income, and I presume they started focusing on that; or at least, I haven't been told I've needed to read one of their articles recently).

Don't get this view of Extra Credits being "pretentious". It's well researched, well expressed opinions that you may or may not agree with it but they're presented well enough to be an enjoyable watch whether you do or don't.
baubeta posted... Seems EC got extra money and decided to start a game publishing company with it.
Not exactly, they gave the surplus money they wouldn't need to indie developers... Instead of sitting on it themselves and just going "ARGH! MoneyMoneyMoneyMoney! ALL MINE!"... Think that was decent of them...

yeah I thought the wording here didn't match what I'd read in this topic, this is the narrator of EC on OCR
Sorry I've been out this whole time! Siggraph is happening up here and I've been a bit swamped. James is a lot closer to everything that's happened, but I can definitely say: the show isn't stopping. We'll just post on Youtube every week until we land elsewhere.
As for the donation thing, I can try to help clear that up a little. Like some of you have said, we never, ever expected the response we got to the Rockethub thing. We didn't think we'd even hit our goal. It was a pretty desperate move for us and we hadn't planned for that (incredibly inspiring) scenario.
Once we'd shot passed the goal and the donations were still piling in from people just showing their support, we spent two weeks trying to figure out what to do. We had originally estimated low for the cost of Allison's surgery, so a good bit of the excess would go to her procedure, follow-up therapy and such. Some would help to pay the guest artists. But we knew we had a lot left over anyway, and we weren't sure what to do with it.
People were clearly giving it to show support, so just giving it back and saying "no thanks" didn't feel right, but we felt uncomfortable just keeping it for ourselves too. We briefly considered passing it on to Child's Play. But then we considered what the donation drive was about: helping a talented person to be able to continue doing the thing they loved. And we thought "maybe that's how we can pay it forward." The publishing fund thing is what we came up with: a way to give some indie developer a chance to keep doing what they love, and hopefully do the medium some good while we were at it.
I totally understand the complaint that we hadn't announced that sort of thing earlier. If we had foreseen this amazing donation outcome, we would have. Again, it was a pretty desperate measure at the time. "Hindsight" and all that.
yeah that's no excuse for using money intended as a donation to help a girl's injury for something entirely different and unrelated to their project
What they should have done is either end the donation drive early, or make some kind of announcement like "You guys gave us a ton of extra money; what should we do with it?"
I sincerely hope people are demanding their money back, I know I would be
