being drunk and being borderline psychotic are two different things

If I posted about having gills and fins and living in the middle of a lake, would you think I'm a fish? >_>

what on earth kind of logic

"You take me way too seriously" logic. That goes for you too Bellis (and lots of other people in this topic). Obviously if I actually opened the door brandishing a machete, the cops would be called on me. I'm not going to just bring such an inconvenience upon myself when it's easier to just ignore the fact that the door is being knocked on. Not only would being arrested be an inconvenience, but it could potentially cause further short and long term inconconviences. I don't like inconvenience. I try to avoid it whenever I can. Doing something that pretty much has a 100% chance of getting me into significant trouble is not consistent with avoiding inconvenience.

I meant it more as a figure of speech. I mean lots of things I say (that tend to be interpreted literally) as figures of speech. That's why I have an account called FigureOfSpeech. Y'all just need to lighten up. (Yes I know that I'm the one that REALLY needed to lighten up last night. I'm not arguing there >_>)

Okay some people in this topic need to get off their high horse

I understand you Caelus, anyone who thinks it's his duty to force his beliefs on to others is a douche and should be treated as such

anyone who thinks otherwise needs to grow a pair. People who do this stuff are self righteous peeps who get off on turning others to their 'religion' or something, no matter how kind they seem.

Still wondering why you don't just get a peephole, or at least one of those chains where you can crack the door without completely unlocking it.

pot, meet kettle.

as much as you may disagree with these people, their religion, or their methods, there's absolutely no way you can argue that "every single one of these people ever are doing it to get off"

annoying? sure

but come on now

They also conform their "beliefs" depending on where they are.

super-liberal town in already liberal New England... "oh we just believe in peace and harmony and for folks to be good to one another and happy and get in touch with spirituality."

Other Jehovas I dealt with years ago were different. "The world is going to end soon because bad places like Babylon and Rome fell because people were sinning too much and now they are again so obviously history is about to repeat itself. We're totally prophets of God and you need to join us so that you can get into the kingdom of heaven."

Why so different? The ones from years ago also had this to say. "We are unfamiliar with this area because we just moved here from the midwest."

You should just answer the door completely naked and act like nothing is up.

What if it is up?

I can understand that people who took me too seriously would be put off by my extreme drunken ramblings, but actually defending people who enter private residences that are clearly marked as such and preaching to people who don't want to hear it? Really? It's intrusive. They legally have the right to do it, but it's intrusive, especially when it involves ringing a buzzer that I didn't even know was hooked up and had never heard before, jolting me awake and damn-near giving me a heart attack.. Sure they didn't know I was asleep or that the buzzer would be offensively loud and that I didn't even know where the sound came from until the 2nd buzz, but considering I didn't want them here in the first place, I have no obligation to be forgiving. "Private residences" are private. If they weren't, the sign in the lobby would read "come on up and make yourself at home even if you don't live here."

Sure, last night all they did was knock and leave some stupid pamphlet, but they had 2 strikes against them already.

I did exaggerate a bit, but what exactly is pot meet kettle about this? I'm past the stage in my life where I felt the need to tell everyone there is no God (or I believe there is none) so what's your point.

Why would I show my courtesy to someone who thinks it's their right to force their beliefs to someone in that someone's home?

And yes, 'force' is a strong word. No matter how polite they might seem, their goal in the end is still to 'convert' you for some reason. You shouldn't hear them out just out of courtesy when you know what they're going to say. You can just say 'no thanks' immediately you know. That's what I do. Caelus was just joking around with the machete and what not, I don't know how you don't see this.

edit: Oh god I'm getting sucked into a religion topic aren't I. 'woops' this'll be my last post

telling people to get off their high horse and then implying that these people can't possibly be doing what they're doing because of genuine faith and a desire to save other people

again, even if their methods are annoying

I've always just told them that I'm happy with my current beliefs and not interested. 99% of the time they say "ok" and leave. Of course, they rarely visit so I don't mind much.

you're naive to think that they're not playing an angle. Like I said before, depending on what they think you'll want to hear, what they tell you they believe will change. The beliefs they told me were very liberal (this is a very liberal area), but years earlier, other Jehovas spoke to me and their beliefs were very conservative (and they said they were new in town. They had moved from a conservative area and had not yet learned about how people are around here, so their beliefs were still localized to their previous area). They want as many people in their organization as possible, so they use the methods they've determined to be most effective in order to recruit more people. It's similar to a gang mentality, only Jehovas aren't all about drugs, weapons, prostitution and murder. They like to steal things though. They have frequent conventions at a local college every summer and I know a few of the people who work for the venue at which said conventions are held (an events center). The Jehovas are notorious for simply taking anything they see, from food to merchandise to whatever is lying around. No one really tries to stop them or tell them not to steal for some reason.
