today on pawn stars
"hey rick ive got a great item for you today, its the first ever bible ever made, yep the very first one"
"wow thats great ive gotta have it, what do you want for it?"
"probably about 2 million, its low I know but I really love your show so im willing to part for a little less"
"oh i dunno man, theres not really much of a market for ancient bibles, it'll just be sitting around in my shop for months until I give it to someone for way less then that, plus it takes up too much shelf space, you gotta conserve the shelf space, i'll give you $5 for it"
"oh...are you sure you cant go a little higher, maybe like $10"
"no"
"oh...well...okay then i guess $5 is fair"

"Earlier today I bought an ancient Bible off a guy for $5. I'm pretty happy about it but I'm still a bit worried so I called in an expert on Bibles to see how much it's really worth."

"Rick, how much did you pay for this Bible?"

"Well, he was asking for $2 million, but I got it for $5."

"Well Rick, I've got something to tell you. The interesting thing about this Bible was that it was autographed by all the famous guys who appeared in it."

"Whoa, really?"

"Yeah look, here's Jesus' autograph right here. And Moses, and Abraham, and Pontius Pilate autographed it right here... oh, oh wow... Muhammad autographed this Bible too for some reason. Obviously he wouldn't do it normally, since, you know, he's the founder of the Islamic religion, but yeah, that really is his signature. And look here, here's an apocryphal book where Jesus says exactly what he thinks about evolution, modern politics, and a whole bunch of other issues. Rick, I think this Bible is worth two BILLION, not two million."

"Wow, thanks dude." *shakes hand* "I never would've known, I was thinking of taking up the guy's offer to pay $10 for it but I'm still glad I got it for $5."

"No problem, Rick, this is a great find."

*Chumlee comes over* "Hey Rick, what you got there? *spills Pepsi all over the ancient Bible*

"God dammit, Chumlee."

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices how every single transaction on the show is this.

false?

Only insofar as people don't always have legitimately valuable items.

Rick treats every item as worthless, unsalable junk without fail.

Uhhhh not really, it really depends on what comes in through the ship.

But to be interested, I'm less interested in the actual buying process than the items themselves, and the little tidbits of history thrown in are a nice bonus.

The problem is most people who walk in to the shop don't really know how to haggle with Rick and the others properly, and thus they end up getting much less than they should.

The Old Man is far harsher than Rick when it comes to haggling, too. It's kind of funny.

My favorite guy will always be the one who had the room full of Transformers stuff, which he valued at $20,000. Rick was kind of "Ehhhhh..." at that, so he called an expert in. The expert's opinion? The stuff was worth at least $20,000. I loled. Dude ended up keeping his stuff cause Rick only offered like $8000 and he figured it could go for more somewhere else.

LOL.

I love how anytime they go higher than his initial offer he immediately drops it.

People expect someone running a pawn shop to give people something close to what their stuff is worth?

To be fair, Rick was making a reasonably fair offer. As has been said many times(and there as well) buying collections is massively expensive; they take up lots of space, tons of hours to catalogue it all, and can be hell to sell since you have to do them individually.

Oh, yeah, I know it was a fair offer on Rick's part. It was actually seemed pretty generous. I do agree though that the guy probably could've gotten more money selling them to private collectors or something. But yeah, Rick is generally pretty fair.

The best thing about the show is the values each person gets on their confession room clips. Their names show up in little dollar bills in the corner.

The Old Man's on the 100
Rick's on the 50
Corey's on the 10 or 5, I forget
Chumlee's on the 1

I still remember the lady trying to get a two or three thousand for the fabrege broach, then pushing for more when Rick offered her something like 25k.
