70,000 people just watched an amazing MVC3 final. There are tons of other tournaments but nothing is on the same level.
What's up with that? Should there be another tournament on that level or is Evo only this big because it's like the super bowl of the fighting game community?
If another fighting game tournament hits 70k, Evo will be at 150k.
It just got started first, is well run (relatively speaking), and is the one tournament where all the top players in the world come. Until they start going to other tournaments consistently, Evo will always have the most top players and therefore be a 'better' tournament.
it's more than that though. you get video game reveals at Evo. it's in Vegas. it's got a sense of professionalism. video game companies get behind it. mainstream video game news sites report on it.
it's just so far on another level. given how huge it is, you'd think there's be room in the market for other tournaments on that scale.
SBO is bigger, but they do that differently. they don't stream it and it's a one match elimination tournament. it doesn't have the same impact that Evo does, at least from an internet standpoint.
Evo is the Super Bowl, at least on this side of the pond. And wasn't it significantly smaller just a couple years ago before SFIV? Who knows if the fighter resurgence will last a while.

People will argue this with me, but the only big fighter before SFIV was MvC2. That alone carried tournaments for years while other games came and went, and now SFIV is carrying tournaments, with MvC3 coming on strong, while games like BlazBlue have a cult following so they get some decent play.
I thought MvC3 was dying because it's a joke game? Or is that just another "board 8 thing'?

have you been exclusively reading bio/ulti posts
I thought it was more than just Bio/Ulti saying that. That the game's balance is so completely awful, both with character balance and general game mechanics like X Factor, that it was considered an even bigger disappointment than Brawl was to the Smash community.

MVC3 got a ton of people signing up for it and showcased an insane tournament with great moments, on the competitive scene at the very least, it won't be dying anytime soon.
I quite like the concept of 'all roads lead to EVO' that the smaller tournaments have leading up to the grand event. If there was another tournament on the scale of EVO I think it would diminish them both a bit. We get so hyped because it's a once a year thing where everyone turns out to take the fight money. Don't go messing with a good thing tbqh.

I wouldn't change a word of this. Perfect explanation. Maybe we can have more of these "road to EVO" tournaments throughout the year, but nothing should try to duplicate or challenge EVO's status as Wrestlemania. Better to just expand EVO itself imo.

I've already invited some of my friends to it next year. I have a feeling with the ridiculous game lineup incoming and with the fantastic word of mouth this will get (and has already gotten), EVO 2012 will ****ing dwarf this one. There's no way I'm missing next year's in person, not when I live 10 miles down the road now.

You need a sign for the camera... hold up a giant picture of Cammy's ass.

Yeah my parents live in Vegas and my dad works VIP for MGM, so I think I'm going to conveniently go visit the folks during EVO time next year.

3S, Tekken and Guilty Gear put up bigger numbers almost every year. Hype and exposure? Sure MVC2 is the best. Turn outs? not so much. It was bigger then CVS2 and ST I guess...
Also being in a small tiny hotel no where near the strip for the first few years definitely helped. I think 2k8 was the first year near the strip. Moving to the strip was a big advancement for them. SFIV being as big as it is skyrocketed it.
Final Round, SBO, NEC are the other big tournaments. Evo is the only important one to fighting gamers tho. The timing and everything is just right. Summer, Vegas, Friends, Games. Other tournaments are placed at kinda weird times of the year in places not as easily accessible for travelers.
I don't know if I buy the "all roads lead to Evo" thing. it's more like there's Evo and then there's a bunch of other random tournaments that most people don't know about until they've begun.
I think it'd be cool if they made the whole thing a little bit more professional. they should have some kind of scoring system like in Golf or Tennis or something that assigns rankings; finish first place and you get 50 points, second and you get 25, etc. Evo started getting more professional this year with serious commentators and Ultradavid dressing up and all that. I hope they push more in that direction. obviously I don't want them to get too professional because it could kill some of the hype, but I'd like to see someone maintain the pools/brackets online so everyone knows what the hell is going on, for some on-screen graphics, for some replay technology (Ark nailed this one in the Evo topics), etc. how can you have that Tron level 3 without a replay afterwards.
anyway, I just want more amazing atmospheres like Evo. you couldn't have that kind of top 8 anywhere else, and it's not because the players don't come. it just isn't as crazy exciting when it's not the super bowl of sporting events. call me greedy.
I hope they'll really try to implement that stuff, because they better realize that it'll be way bigger next year. We need, at the very least, easily accessible and understandable brackets. A point system is also a good idea; it would help fans recognize the top players. I was thinking about how awesome a replay system would be, but that seems kinda tough to pull off.

a rankings system. they technically have one - Wolfkrone is the #1 seed for Evo, for instance - but I'd like to see that stuff public. make a bracket that people can see and seed all the players to give people a sense of who's who and what's an upset.
-- like that, basically. I'd be really interested to see who the top 5 players are. of course, fgs aren't big enough or pay enough money where players can just go to every tournament in the country, so it might just be futile. it'd be awesome if they could get there though. too bad somebody doesn't pick up Evo like ESPN picked up WSOP. that could really trigger a popularity explosion. you have to know Evo is on in order to find it whereas you might just stumble across it on TV.
